As part of its 100 year anniversary, AARL has produced a two-volume set called A History of QST, its monthly journal. The first volume: Amateur Radio Technology, which I’ve barely gotten into, is a collection of QST articles organized by broad subject: e.g., The Spark Era, Propagation Science, Antenna Design, Amateur Radio in Orbit.Volume 2 is QST Advertising, though not just a reprint of QST ads. It’s organized in eleven chapters, with chapter 1 being everything up to 1920. Chapter 2 covers the 20’s; chapter 3, the 30’s, etc., up to chapter 11: 2010 and beyond.Each chapter starts out with a 2-3 page introduction to what was going on with amateur radio in that decade. Then there are about 30 pages that reproduce ads of the era in excellent quality on glossy paper, each with a short blurb at the bottom explaining a little of the history of the company depicted.It’s fascinating reading that you can pick up whenever you have some time (there’s no plot). No matter when you got started in ham radio (’57 for me) there’s either nostalgia or amazement at the progression of equipment shown. Some of it is “I had one of thoseâ€, or maybe “that’s the one I always wantedâ€. Even if you’re brand new to the hobby, you can look back on where it’s been.
I will never have the chance to operate most of the radios in this book, because I am too young. I love the old tube type equipment. This book has it all. If you are interested in the history of amateur radio then this book must be part of your library.
Book was as advertised, arrived as forecast, and was good value for the money. The book is a good addition to my reference library.
