Moonlight on Nightingale Way is the conclusion to the On Dublin Street series. Grace Farquhar can't stand her disrespectful, sleep-robbing, and womanizing neighbor. The few doorstep discussions she's had with him were of annoyed and sarcastic nature, and Grace honestly doesn't understand how female can fall for him - if it weren't for his hotter-than-holy looks.Logan MacLeod just got out of prison for assaulting the man who beat and almost raped his sister. That 2 years in prison have changed him, and he is trying hard to put that past behind him an move on. And dealing with that annoying neighbor of his is not on top pf his priorities. However, when Grace involuntarily witnesses a huge and unexpected turn in Logan's life, she willingly stands by his side and helps him figure things out...What I loved about this book:The buildup between the main charactersThe steamy scenesWhat I felt needed improvement:The storyline was too drama riddled in the end (unnecessarily, IMHO)The constant interactions which previous main characters were a bit too annoyingWhile I enjoyed Moonlight on Nightingale Way , and it was was better than the latest books I read in this series, it still couldn't reach the bar set by the first 3 books On Dublin Street , Down London Road or Before Jamaica Lane. The writing was Samantha-Young-like great. The story is told exclusively from Grace's POV, so there's the constant suspense regarding what's going on in Logan's head. Samantha Young is a genius when it comes to creating characters with great chemistry, and this book is a prime example. There's something I really, really love in a book, and it's when characters are mutually attracted to each other but start the story off by strongly disliking one another. I'm talking about the kind of hate/lust relationship that creates extremely exciting, underlying sexual tension; as well as a healthy dose of sexual frustration. And believe me, Moonlight on Nightingale Way did not disappoint in that regard. Especially the steamy scenes were epic (even though you had to be patient to get to that point!) "Like the man needed to be compared to God. His ego was already biblical. Logan McLeod was an arrogant pain in my arse."I also liked the main characters very much. Grace is a quiet and withdrawn character with a good soul, but far from being naive and inexperienced. She comes with baggage, but has managed to make a life for herself despite of that baggage she carries. In some books, it's just so cliché: as soon as the female main character is a bit less outgoing, and likes her quiet to read a book, she happens to have no experience with men and turns out totally naive. Thank god, Grace is not one of those girls. The only thing however, that annoyed the hell out of me with Grace was that she seemed to find everyone hot! Be it Logan or whatever On Dublin Street male specimen, she found them absolutely flaming hot. Girl, have some self-respect. "I didn't particularly want to stick around to see Logan do a good deed. It might put a dent in my annoyance, and I wanted nothing to penetrate my dislike for my new neighbor."And Logan was also a very likeable character, although it took me some time to warm up to him. Logan is an ex-convict and trying hard to put this past behind him. He's trying to be a better man but knows that his bad reputation is following him. What's worse, his prison stay has left marks, and made him question whether he can ever go back to respecting his own self. I loved how he was the vulnerable one in the story, and that Grace was the one who "saved" him, despite having to fight through her own issues. "I can't walk away from you even if I wanted to. And I don't want to. You are reality and sweet oblivion wrapped up in one annoyingly argumentative, always bloody-right, classy, gorgeous-as-frak package."The storyline however was only OK. There was a lot of buildup between Grace and Logan which was really great (and which totally kept me on my toes), but once they had fond their way together, the story was a tad too cheesy and I was also annoyed at the fact that there was a lot of unnecessary drama. Half of the people in that book had awful parents and are suffering from it: Logan, Grace and Maia. That was just a bit too much too be coincidental. Last but not least, I just thought that there were too many characters: all the On Dublin Street crew was there (and ever-present, albeit a few years older) and I just couldn't keep up anymore with who was who. I kid you not, the book felt too crowded. All in all, Moonlight on Nightingale Way totally had potential to pass the "beginning-of-the-series" bar, since the first half of the book was full of tension and anticipation. The few twists and turns in the storyline also made up for an interesting read once the characters gave in to their attraction. But the end of their story was not as exciting as I hoped for it to be. Still,The epilogue here was nice: it was a proper round-up and finale to the whole series, as each couple got a few pages to showcase their happy ending. It's been a nice series, but I am not sad to let the On Dublin Street crew go, because it became a little too much (characters) in the end, and the fact that all characters always starred in all the books made the matter very confusing. It was also too much happy end all rolled into one, which made the whole series a tad cheesy and unrealistic. But hey, some books in the series - especially the first ones - make absolutely great reads.

Before this book Nate and Liv's story was my favorite but this story rivals that one for top favorite. I love this book for the emotions it brings out and how you wish for the happy ending that both Grace and Logan deserve. We are introduced to Logan in the previous story where he was serving time for the nealy fatal beating of his sister's boyfriend. When he gets out, let's just say that Logan is definitely making up for lost time. We meet Grace his next door neighbor who has no appreciation for his revolving door of ladies and the all the "noises" they make. Logan and Grace do not start out on the right foot and continue to antagonize each other until a surprise Logan never knew existed shows up. Grace is there when Logan meets the daughter that his ex told him she aborted and Grace puts her animosity aside to support the scared and anxious teen as well as her surprised father. Grace becomes the person who helps them to build a relationship and in the process falls for both father and daughter. We get to watch as Logan and Grace build a friendship, become each others support system, and so much more. We watch a father and daughter connect and see the insecurity that Logan has on being a father to a teenage daughter. We see Grace become the one woman who Logan's daughter can count on.Logan begins to see that Grace is so much more than he ever thought and he begins to develop deeper feelings for her but he struggles with memories of prison and the mindset that he doesn't deserve the love and salvation Grace would bring. He pushes her away and in the process destroys the trust that Grace had for him.Grace had a cold and miserable upbringing that left her riddled with many insecurities. Logan reaches past all that and claims her heart but when he pushes her away he brings back all those insecurities she thought she had overcome. When Logan realizes she is everything worth fighting for and goes after her, Grace has to decide if she is willing to put all her love and trust in him again.I have to say at times I wanted to slap both Logan and Grace but I think that's what makes it such an amazing story. You become emotionally invested in these characters and want them to get their HEA.P.s. I loved the insight into all the characters lives that we get in the epilogue.

How can you go wrong with an architecture book where the forward is written by Prince Charles? Yes, the Prince is a political imbecile. But he is an excellent architectural expert and critic, and one of the first to push back against the fetid tide of architectural Modernism. (You can tell that he’s good on architecture from the vicious attacks on him conducted by the priests of Modernism.) He famously compared part of the new British Library to an academy for secret policemen. And the Prince enthusiastically recommends this book, which should mean something.I also recommend it, though I am not in any way comparable to Prince Charles. But we have spent the past three years working with classical architects to design what is, presumably, the final house we will live in. Before we began the design process, in 2012, I read and absorbed this book. It informed a lot of our thinking and it guided our selection of architects. And as we move toward actually starting to build our new house, I have read and re-absorbed this book, confirming that we have, indeed, “gotten our house right.” No small part of my confidence in that design success is due to Cusato’s work.Cusato is a “classical architect.” In context, that means an architect who appreciates and is guided by traditional architecture generally (roughly prior to 1920), and who is particularly focused on Greek and Roman exemplars, especially the classical “orders,” as the guideposts for much of that design. Usually, it means an architect who thinks there are objectively aesthetically superior ways to design houses, that it is possible to know and practice what makes those ways superior, but that those methods and abilities of creating superior designs have been mostly lost in a sea of ugliness. Such architects are more common than they used to be, but are still a tiny minority in an era when most residential design is heinous McMansions or pseudo-“French Eclectic” mishmashes, and most commercial design is modernist (though trending today away from its worst forms of High Modernism and Brutalism). Such classical architects are represented heavily in New Urbanism, found especially in the Florida Panhandle towns of Seaside and Alys Beach. They largely hew to the philosophical underpinnings of Christopher Alexander’s “A Pattern Language.” Modern working architects in this vein include Cusato herself, Steve Semes, Thomas Gordon Smith, Duncan Stroik, Matthew and Elizabeth McNicholas, Steven Mouzon, Richard Economakis, and Michael Lykoudis—many of whom are tied to the School of Architecture at Notre Dame.Cusato’s book is laid out extremely well (as you’d expect). She explains why you need this book: in short, simply to understand the language of architecture, without which incoherence results. She then lays out nine rules around which all traditional design revolves, such as “Make the whole greater than the sum of its parts,” “design with texture,” “design with common sense” (could it work without hidden support? is it necessary?) “design for place,” and “learn the vocabulary.” These could be mistaken for clichés, except that the rest of the book is a detailed application of all those rules to every area of residential architecture, completed with precise explanations and exquisite drawings showing the topic under discussion.Cusato devotes a chapter to each important part of a house, beginning with Schematic Design (massing, symmetry, unity and duality, proportions, inflections). She discusses in great detail the classical Orders (Doric, Tuscan, Corinthian, etc.), explaining their origins and characteristics. These two chapters form the backbone of the book. Subsequent chapters go into more detail on specific parts of the house: Arches and Pediments; Windows; Exterior Doors; Entrances; Porches, Balconies and Railings; Roofs; Cornices and Eaves; Chimneys; Interiors; Materials and Methods. In each chapter, Cusato explains the basics of construction (and history) of the element. She then shows clear versions of each element to avoid and versions to use, annotated in detail. I cannot emphasize enough how clearly Cusato manages to make each discussion, without dumbing it down or giving short shrift to any aspect. The only bad thing about reading a book like this is that afterwards you cringe every time you look at most modern houses. Each element of the house I live in now, for example, is ripped directly from the “avoid” section of each chapter of Cusato’s book. That can’t be helped. What can be helped are the elements of any future house I live in, and to the extent those end up better, Cusato’s book has played a big role. Sure, our architects played the biggest role. But without reading this book I wouldn’t have known where to start, I wouldn’t have known what type of architect we wanted, and I would not have been able to assure myself we were going in the right direction. With reading this book, my life is complete—or at least my house will be.Finally, while by itself this book is both fascinating and useful, it’s probably best to read it alongside some other books, if you are actually building a house. Cusato does not claim to cover everything; in particular, she focuses little on later traditional styles, like Prairie, which do not fit neatly into the traditional Orders. Someone building a house should probably look at Virginia McAlester’s “A Field Guide To American Houses,” as well as Stephen Mouzon’s “Traditional Construction Patterns,” and probably Alexander’s “A Pattern Language.” There are also a variety of books in the same traditionalist vein that are shorter on theory and technical explanations and longer on pictures, like Russell Versaci’s “Creating A New Old House.” But of all these, I’d say Cusato’s is the most essential. If you are planning on building a house, or even buying a house, you should get it.

Phenomenal book that talks about the historically correct way to style an Adam, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, or Neo-Colonial style house. Also quite useful for Victorian style homes, but less authoritative. Once you get into Craftsman-style homes (turn of the 20th century) and later there really isn't anything of value in this book. There's absolutely nothing on mid-century modern. Lots of information about proportion and the Greek/Roman orders of architecture. Great reference if you want to create a historically accurate home from one of the specifically mentioned styles, or need to do historic restoration without butchering its character. The book mostly focuses on the exterior, admitting that interior was beyond the scope of the book. There is one short but useful chapter on the interior, however. For historically-correct interiors I really liked Traditional American Rooms (Winterthur Style Sourcebook): Celebrating Style, Craftsmanship, and Historic Woodwork, which covers the traditional woodwork of homes from the same era, with examples from 12 of the original 13 colonies. Also worthy of note are pattern books from those eras, many of which are still in print, such as the works of Asher Benjamin. The strength of this book is that it explicitly shows common mistakes and explains why they look odd, whereas most historic references (like "The American Vignola") often skip details, or are harder to follow. If you're interested in a more detailed understanding of the classical orders, Robert Chitham's "The Classical Orders of Architecture" has this book beat in its sheer depth, although that book is geared toward architects, not homeowners. Still, this is a great addition to the library and one I find myself referencing more.

An absolute masterwork of what is right about traditional architecture, and what is absolutely wrong with the majority of housing stock produced after, say, 1950 or so in the United States. I know the author - her research for this book is exhaustive and granular, unlike anything else I have seen published. If you build, or design homes - PLEASE make this one of your most dog-eared references and put what is between its covers to use in your work. Better yet, put it to work AND become a vocal evangelist for why you doing so. Our housing stock will thank you.

I poured over this book before we built our house. The advice at the beginning, for the planning stages, is VERY GOOD. Some things to remember, though (the most important being that I think there is an updated version of this book, which I didn't realize when I bought this one. I wish I had realized that before purchasing this one because it may have some extremely important updates that support more modern ways of building):-It doesn't give examples for every type of home you may want to build.-It is helpful for someone wishing to build their own home, although modern contractors probably won't want to abide by any of its precepts--it teaches the good, sturdy, beautiful old way of building--certainly not the easy way. I finally gave up on the idea of recessed windows and trim the way it is referenced in this book, because it isn't cost effective or smart in a windy, wintery location to recess your windows and have potential water damage...finishing your house the "right" way is costly nowadays.-being someone who loves the look of century-old homes, I wish with all my heart that this book gave examples I could actually follow nowadays, that are efficient and actually do-able.

Great quality

good for a law book

Required for class but hardly used in the class. the book was not laid out very well and seemed out of date and irrelevant. Not sure why the instructor even required it since we hardly referenced it.
