If you can get past the many spelling errors, you might notice there is no mention of the 8 practice domains or the 12 core functions. The elements of the domains and functions are mentioned briefly, spread out, and out of order, but the fact that they're official groupings and very important to this work is completely ignored. This is a major oversight by the author/s! Similarly, they could have used the DSM criteria for substance use disorder (critical info to know), but they switched the criteria around and changed the wording as if they were trying not to plagiarize, which only made it confusing.This book is full of worthless fluff. The first 93 pages are dedicated to individual substances, their effects, withdrawal symptoms, street names, etc. There were maybe 3 questions on the exam related to substances. There is no reason to go into such great detail, especially when more important elements are practically omitted.The company includes with this book a letter offering a free study skills DVD that readers can have only after they've given a review for the book. Not wanting to guess or lie, I waited until I'd read a good portion of the book and by then it was too close to my exam to even bother writing a review and waiting for the DVD with study skills. It seems like a cheap way to get good reviews, by bribing people with free "extras". But if the DVD is anything like the "bonus materials" they offer online, I know I didn't miss out on anything. There was nothing of value at the secret link on the website. Unfortunately, it's just a sneaky way to get readers' email addresses when they "unlock" the info.The "secret keys" at the end of the book would be much more helpful placed at the beginning, so people could read them and use the study tips before digging into the material. Some of the success strategies involve how to study and use time wisely which is useless if you don't get to it until your weeks of study time have dwindled down to a matter of days.I normally wouldn't mind the spelling errors, but it seriously makes me doubt the credibility of this company and their product. The lack of important information that is critical to this line of work proves the low worth of this book.Test-takers would be much better served searching for the following online (which are completely free!)* 8 practice domains* 12 core functions* stages of change* TAP 21* TIP 35* TIP 34* look through any notes you have handy from your classesI passed the exam despite having wasted weeks reading this book. I'm so glad I asked around and discovered the truly helpful information to study, because this is an expensive exam to have to retake! Don't waste time or money on this book.
I purchased this (kindle version) to have a refresher for a job interview exam. I am already a dual-diagnosis counselor, and I am really glad I had a lot of knowledge already to deal with this book. While there are separated "sections" to keep similar material together (ie: pharmacology, theory, counseling, ethics), the information in the sections was jumbled and didn't flow well, and frequently had incorrect or contradictory information in the same paragraph. One example of an incorrect definition is "Detoxification - when cross-dependent chemicals are substituted for the chemical which is being abused with a slow withdrawal of that chemical" (pg 1031 of my kindle version). Contradictory information regarding the DSM IV axes includes - "...Axis I disorders which include behavioral disorders as well as some physical disorders and Axis II disorders which are only behavioral..." Though by the end of the paragraph they provided the correct information. Also, while I understand that psychotropic medications used to treat mental health diagnoses are drugs, they are not (aside from perhaps the anxiolytics) generally drugs of abuse and should not have been randomly placed among the descriptions of illicitly used drugs (between inhalants and designer drugs), instead they should have been found in a treatment section. One of the test questions I got "wrong" was about the most commonly used sedative/hypnotic, in which they said the correct answer is alcohol (which is a depressant, not a sedative/hypnotic). They need to hire a new editor and someone who has a better counseling background if they make a new addition. I can't recommend this book.
I previously used these resources when I was studying to take my masters exam in Social work. They were very beneficial and crucial in helping me pass. So now that it is time to take my LMAC, I knew I needed to buy these books to use to study.
I found it easy to read and I learned some new things even after working in the field for years! I feel confident that this guide will help me be successful when I take my exam and as a resource afterwards.

This is the best study guide for the CAADC Exam. My Supervisor at work sits on the board and after reviewing the material she immediately claimed I will pass with this book.She explained there are 6 test that circulates, and this book covers all 6.
It appears to be right on target...let's see how I do on the test. The proof is always in the pudding.
