This is a wonderful book! We have been eating there for decades, and the food is incredibly good. Now that I've read the history of the Deetjens, and how he built and she furnished the rooms, I want to stay there the next time we are in Big Sur. The story of Helmut Deetjen, coming to America from Norway, and using the wood from downed coastal redwoods in the canyon to build cottages and buildings, mostly before electricity arrived in Big Sur, is fascinating. A well written book, very interesting, and I happened to finally read it during the big storm which caused the destruction of several of the buildings, and the closure of Rt. 1. As soon as we can get there again, we will be staying at Deetjen's Big Sur Inn.
This book talks about the History of the Inn in Big Sur, as well as the family who lived there for many years. There are some really great pictures, and the book is full of many stories. If you are planning to visit Deetjen's be sure to inquire first. It's a lovely place to stay, however, the walls are paper thin, and you must be quiet after 10:00PM or your neighbors will complain. You can hear word for word what everyone is saying, in the adjoining rooms. It's very historical. The rooms are quaint, the grounds are beautiful, and the food is outstanding. It's a fun place to visit, and reading the history first, will give you more insight into the little inn.
In the late 50s, early 60s...I had the good fortune to stumble into this Simple Inn.... Poppa Deetjen and Ed quietly made all travelers welcome. It truly is one of those very unique places where time literally stands still. Nothing changes, if anything, it gets better, each time you visit.Anita Alan has captured the very essance of of ALL that the Inn is about, she has stimulated my senses so, that I can taste, feel and re-experience my past times.... Her writing will most definetly stimulate you into to visiting, an enjoying your own experience..I GAR-RON-TEE ! !
I stayed at this Inn, in 1966 when I was 14 years old. This book brought back all the good memories I had about the place.

What a wonderful view into the past of a famous landmark! Ms. Alan's poetry and prose made me feel as if I were a witness to each event. I can't wait to vist the inn on my next trip to Big Sur.
Contacted Vendor and reported to Amazon at least 3 weeks ago that I did not receive this book and a refund has not been received. And I have had NO correspondence from either the Vendor or Amazon. First time in many years that I have been very disappointed with Amazon service and I am now deciding if I want to order books for Christmas via the site.
"Big Sur Inn" is a magnificent legacy book that will endure forever as a tribute to Deetjen and special treat to many who will never be blessed to travel to the Inn. The author not only did justice to Deetjen, but created an interesting collection of photographs certain to please even the most discerning of readers. This book should be in every library and bookstore, and on YOUR own coffee table at home. You will pick it up and look through it over and over. You won't be diappointed. Bravo!
