I've read the entire John Milton series and found it to be a nice balance of character development and action. Perfect books for an old retired military man like me to enjoy. Like the other books in the series, this book deprived me of sleep. I just wanted to read "one more chapter" before turning in for the night. I would urge a potential reader to start with book one and work through the series to get the most out of this book. Hopefully we haven't heard the last of John Milton.

This is the first John Milton book that I read, and I have already bought the boxed set for the first 3 in the John Milton series, as well as the boxed set of Beatrix Rose (a character introduced in the book)!! This in itself should be testament to how enjoyable the book is for all the thriller-lovers.You do not need to have read the other books in the story to enjoy this one, although it does refer to previous escapades. The book is really well written with the right balance between understanding the character and fast-paced action. I love these type of books where someone (an ex-assassin) has a conscience and uses their skill to help the underdog.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am envious of anyone who will still have the joy to read it - I am looking forward to starting from book 1.

John Milton is a fabulously complex character, “brave and selfless, and a brilliant soldier”! I forgot how much I enjoy this series, so I’m starting where I left off. Book #4 starts with Milton’s first assignment for Group Fifteen in London. Beatrix Rose is Number One and Milton is bottom of the ladder, Number 12. Why aren’t there fifteen agents? Control has sent agents to kill two Russians, and Milton messes up and fails too kill his target and the man gets away. Beatrix also makes a mistake that cannot be fixed. Years later, Beatrix and Milton are both in hiding from their former boss, Control. What happens is detailed, suspenseful, exciting, and makes for a great read!

I think this was easily the best John Milton book yet - fast-paced, engaging, fun locations for the action, GREAT new characters in Anna and Beatrix, good plot twists, and it brings Milton back into the world he's been trying to escape after a couple of books where he's been underground. Can't wait for the next one.

I should have taken notes. There were a few times when having a British author writing American dialogue just doesn't work. Geography is another minor issue. Examples: very rarely, if ever, have I heard an American say that they would get something sorted other than maybe their socks in their sock drawer. If there's a problem, we fix it, handle it, take care of it, or resolve it. Almost never do we sort it - unless we watch too many imported shows on BBC-America or Netflix. Also, The Hamptons, on the eastern tip of Long Island, New York were referred to as upstate. Nope. That's not upstate. Upstate is farther north in the main portion of the state, not Long Island which is due east of New York City about as far south as you can get before hitting either ocean or New Jersey.Otherwise no complaints.

This novel starts out in London, as a prequel to when John Milton was on his first assignment for Control. Very fast paced read with very little unnecessary prose. Dawson integrates the back story, for the new to the series readers, in way that does not really bore those who have followed Milton from the beginning. From my standpoint, this was a return to what made me get involved in this series. I really wasn’t all that enthused with The Driver, immediately preceding Ghosts in the series. The way Dawson works the end game to this novel, he leaves the door open for the continuation. It’s not a cliff hanger ending, just a way to continue if he so decides.

In this fourth thriller from best-selling fiction author Mark Dawson, John Milton is once again thrown into a situation where he must utilize his training as a special agent when he is recruited for a mission by a beautiful woman from the Russian Secret Service. But there is a catch: John is being hired to locate Agent #1 Beatrix Rose, a highly trained assassin, who has gone into hiding just like Milton. The story swings to London and then takes to Russia and then Hong Kong, where Beatrix Rose is in hiding. John Milton’s motive for agreeing to this is simple: to rescue his friend [POPE] who is being held hostage by the KGB until John Milton accomplishes his mission. If John fails, his friend dies. John is being blackmailed, but he’ll do anything for his friend who once saved his life.If you want to know the rest of this gripping tale, read the book. It's worth it.Mark Dawson has a real talent for bringing John Milton to life in the stories he has crafted as an ex-assassin, who is trying to come to grips with his past and all the bad stuff he has done, seeks to do the right thing by helping people. You could say that he is an assassin with a “soft spot” for people in trouble. This book was my favorite in the series so far and as far as I can see, can only get better from here on in. Milton is the hero that everybody needs, and if Dawson continues to unravel these stories with the hard-paced action, fight scenes and grit that makes them absolute page-turners readers can knock off in an afternoon, it won’t be long before we see these novels on the big screen. I’d recommend reading the books first. Now, onto John Milton #5 while the evening is still early...

I read this book because of the very high Amazon ratings. I love international thriller books but was disappointed by the story and I did not like the reader. The book spends too much time discussing the scenery and what people are eating or drinking. The story is also quite disconnected with gaps in explanations. For example how a woman dying of cancer in Hong Kong suddenly appears in Russia as a super assassin, makes no sense. I don't plan on reading any of the other books in this series.
