An eight-time GRAMMY winner, Emmy winner, author, philanthropist, and reggae icon, Ziggy Marley has released thirteen albums to much critical acclaim. Now with his own label, Tuff Gong Worldwide, and publishing company, Ishti Music, Marley has complete control of his master recordings and publishing. His early immersion in music came at age ten when he sat in on recording sessions with his father, Bob Marley. As front man to Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, the group released eight best-selling albums that garnered three GRAMMYs, with such chart-topping hits as "Look Who's Dancing," "Tomorrow People" and "Tumbling Down." Ziggy's first solo album, Dragonfly (RCA Records), was released in 2003. His second solo release, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide), won a GRAMMY in 2006 for "Best Reggae Album." His third solo studio album, Family Time (Tuff Gong Worldwide), scored a 5th GRAMMY award for "Best Children's Album." In 2011, Ziggy released his 4th solo studio album, Wild and Free, as well as his first graphic novel entitled MARIJUANAMAN. This book is so sweet that its hard not to give it a great review. The pictures of the Marley family and the narrative sections scattered throughout the book are all wonderful to look at and read. Kudos to the Marley family for producing such a lovely book. But it is, after all, a cookbook and is not without problems. If I were to recommend it, it would be:to cooks who are interested in adding some health-centered recipes with a Caribbean twist to their repertoires,to those who own juicers (there are several pages of nice juice combinations), and,to cooks who are good at either throwing caution to the wind and don't mind cooking instructions that lack a lot of detail.The Stout Gingerbread recipe is the first recipe I made and, although I think the result is worth buying this book for, the recipe served to be a case in point for some of the problems I found elsewhere in the book.The recipe calls for: "1 1/4 sticks of butter, or substitute 1 tsp of Ziggy Marley's Coco-Mon Coconut Oil."Unless Coco-Mon oil has some serious magical properties, I didn't see any way that 1 TEASPOON of oil could substitute for 10 TABLESPOONS of butter. So I went online to see if I could find any corrections to the recipe. I did not find a correction, but I did find a video of Ziggy's sister and his impressively self-possessed daughter making the gingerbread. They used the butter option, and I decided to go with that, too. Since the instructions are not orthodox for gingerbread, it was worth watching the video just to make sure it would come out.The recipe does not indicate what size loaf pan to use, so I used the biggest one I have which the batter almost filled to overflowing. At the 35-minute mark, the center of the gingerbread was still very wobbly. It was still wobbly at 45 minutes. I left it in for another 10 minutes before my toothpick came out clean. In spite of a clean toothpick, the gingerbread was beyond moist and I wondered if the ratio of liquid to dry ingredients was correct. Getting it out of the pan in one piece did not happen. (photos)The resulting gingerbread, though overly moist, had AMAZING flavor. So delicious. We served it with mounds of freshly whipped cream after Christmas dinner to everyone's delight. This is a recipe that I will continue to tinker with to get it just a bit more on the dry side.This is seriously good gingerbread.I did not count the recipes, but there are not a ton of them and, of those, many seem to be there almost as fillers.For example, the oatmeal recipe is basically just oatmeal with a nice selection of pretty standard, healthy toppings, although the inclusion of a nut butter may prove to be a delightful find for those who have never discovered the pleasure stirring peanut (or other nut) butter into their oatmeal.The Fennel Salad is fennel bulbs with salt, oil and vinegar, all "to taste." The directions say to "taste and toss," but toss and taste would probably make more sense.The Sweet Potato Oven Fries are just that.A lot of the recipes include one of Ziggy Marley's brand of oils, although they mostly all say, "or oil of your choosing." Some recipes call for either Ziggy's Curry, Lemon-Ginger or Orange-Almond Coconut Oils, but neglect to note how much of those additional flavors to add on your own if using plain "coconut oil of your choosing."Bottom line:
LOVE! Love love love love love! I received this cookbook late last week, and so far I have made three dishes, and one of the juices. I have one more planned for next week. Everything has been amazing, and the whole family (kids too!) keep commenting about how good the food is this week. Not only that, but every recipe is just plain beautiful. So colorful and healthy. Things are clearly labeled for food sensitivities like gluten and dairy, and substitutions are offered. This may possibly be my favorite cookbook ever.
I'm from Jamaica and have been looking for a good cookbook with healthy options, this book deliveries just that.
Some good recipes, but honestly I thought there were going to be more Bob Marley Ital (I-tal) or vegetarian recipes in this book. Disappointing, but I recognize it's not a Bob Marley cookbook, but rather Ziggy's.
Gave it to my husband for xmas. I can't go wrong with anything by Ziggy Marley when it comes to my husband. He loved it and can't wait to cook for us from this book. Now I just have to deal with the messy kitchen afteward. Yikes.
so far only 1 recipe but i can't wait to try more! Simplified for cooking where we can't get good Jamaican ingredients too.
