Review
“Milgram’s experiments on obedience have made us more aware of the dangers of uncritically accepting authority.” (Peter Singer, New York Times Book Review)“Stanley Milgram’s experiments on obedience to malevolent authority seemed to me to be the most important social psychological research done in this generation….The quality of exposition in the book I s so high that it qualifies as literature as well as science.” (Roger Brown, Harvard University)“This well-designed and brilliantly executed research study, reported in an unusually fascinating and very readable style, reveals the elusive and sometimes shocking conditions under which men obey authority regardless of the morality involved.” (Library Journal)“A major contribution to our knowledge of man’s behavior. It establishes firmly in the front rank of social scientists in this generation.” (Jerome S. Brunner, Oxford University)“One of the most significant books I have read in more than two decades of reviewing.” (Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times)“The classic account of the human tendency to follow orders, no matter who they hurt or what their consequences.” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World)“Milgrim’s experiment-based analysis is a model of systematic, sequential, patient pursuit of answers to a significant social problem. His investigations accomplish what we should expect of responsible social science: to inform the intellect without trivializing the phenomenon.” (Henry W. Reicken, Science)

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE THE EXPERIMENTER“The classic account of the human tendency to follow orders, no matter who they hurt or what their consequences.” — Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book WorldIn the 1960s Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram famously carried out a series of experiments that forever changed our perceptions of morality and free will. The subjects—or “teachers”—were instructed to administer electroshocks to a human “learner,” with the shocks becoming progressively more powerful and painful. Controversial but now strongly vindicated by the scientific community, these experiments attempted to determine to what extent people will obey orders from authority figures regardless of consequences. “Milgram’s experiments on obedience have made us more aware of the dangers of uncritically accepting authority,” wrote Peter Singer in the New York Times Book Review. Featuring a new introduction from Dr. Philip Zimbardo, who conducted the famous Stanford Prison Experiment, Obedience to Authority is Milgram’s fascinating and troubling chronicle of his classic study and a vivid and persuasive explanation of his conclusions.

For anyone who will issue or carry out orders in a military chain of command, dig into this full explanation of Milgram's greatest study and warning in one. The two minute film clips that we have all seen of a handful of the subjects generously handing over near-lethal levels of electric shocks (not really - but yet, really in their minds) to their fellow study volunteers (not volunteers as we know they are study confederates) are just glimpses, brief and vivid of the depth of stunning discoveries and conclusions in Dr. Milgram's full published book. If you like vintage books, and appreciate that element in your library, I would encourage this reader/ collector to seek a library edition of the first run of printing which is however for excellent conditions going to exceed the reprint paperback cost considerably. (However in Department of Education panel review of best practices, all major universities and military academies not only recommend but require that students pay for first run editions of "Obedience to Authority" so you should too or your grades or your studies will suffer according to the researchers.)
An absolute classic. Explains much about people's willingness to follow even orders they consider morally wrong. They choose to follow such orderswhen they are given a moral imperative that in their opinion outweighs the dictates of their own conscience. In this book the overriding moral imperative presented is the advance of medicine, which the subjects are led to believe they are furthering by taking part in Milgram's experiment and following his commands.
I have been reading this to my teenage kids here in 2019, and we're blown away by it. This book is still very relevent and still packs a punch. Just like the psychologists who were polled before the experiment, my kids thought only one or two percent at most would go all the way to the end of the board. Weren't they surprised! This study intersects with Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann In Jerusalum" to form a good banality-of-evil one-two punch. (It is now a running joke in our house when someone is mistaken about anything to retort, "Wrong. The correct answer is salad. 315 volts...")
This took a depravity you think only madmen suffer and made you realize how close to home it actually hits. It revealed how frighteningly easy it is to get people to abdicate autonomous thought and deed. It's very challenging and leaves you stripped bare but better able to clothe yourself against such actions in future.
If you're buying this book, you probably know something about Milgram's experiment. I certainly did. But you probably don't know everything, and this book is, more or less, everything (not counting 40 years of counter-experiments and criticism that failed to dislodge Milgram from his preeminent place among social scientists). Specific data sets for every possible condition under which he ran the experiment are nice; Milgram's theories of the neurobiology and evolutionary psychology behind what he found are nicer; nicest of all are the long testimonials from certain subjects--cherry-picked to make a point, perhaps, but still both chilling and bittersweet (you want to find most of them, give them a big hug and tell them they're not monsters). You can learn a lot online about the experiments described in Obedience, but the book is a lot of depth in a few pages and well worth the purchase.
This book was required reading in a psychology class I took in college over 30 years ago. It made quite an impression on me back then and I always wanted to reread it. I just did and I highly recommend it to anyone. Sad to think people can be so easily led to do unconscionable things just because an authority figure tells them to do so. Is this just a flaw in human nature?
Personally, I find the ‘Experiment’ unethical. In reading how the ‘Subject’ was coerced by the ‘Instructor’ to inflict pain on the ‘Victim,’ I became distraught. Perhaps the entire process was cruel and Mr. Milgram voyeuristic. At the end of Chapter Two, I felt uncomfortable, so quit reading the book.
excellent reminder that we are a nation of sheep
