Review

"George R. R. Martin meets Terry Pratchett."―Buzzfeed Books"Kings of the Wyld is gritty but not grim. It was a blast to read, from start to finish. The boys are getting the band back together, and woe be to anyone who stands in their way. Magic swords, broken promises, and some of the craziest action you're likely to read this side of the Wyld. Reading this book made me want to grab a sword and set off on an epic quest."―Christopher Paolini"A fantastic read, a rollicking, page-turning, edge-of-your-seat road-trip of a book. Great characters, loveable rogues that I genuinely cared about and all manner of fantastical monsters. All spiced with a sly sense of humour that had me smiling throughout. Wonderful."―John Gwynne"A comedy, an adventure tale, a consideration on growing older, and a sendup of fantasy conventions, all at the same time. It also has heart. In short: it rocks....I finished this book in one night. If I could, I'd see the tour, and buy the t-shirt. Instead, I'll have to content myself with waiting for the sequel, and reading it again."―B&N SF & Fantasy Blog"Brilliant debut novel... Eames has cranked the thrills of epic fantasy up to 11... Moreover, the plot is emotionally rewarding, original, and hilarious. Eames clearly set out to write something fun to read, and he has succeeded spectacularly."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Calibri; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} "Fantastic, funny, ferocious. Hugely recommended. Read it now."―Sam Sykes"Absolutely awesome. If the Beatles held a concert tomorrow (with all the necromancy required for that to happen), it still wouldn't be as good a 'getting the band back together' story as this. Full of heroes, humor, and heart."―Jon Hollins"Nicholas Eames brings brazen fun and a rock & roll sensibility to the fantasy genre."―Sebastien de Castell"A fantastic epic fantasy! Just the right smidgen of tongue-in-cheek to work wonderfully. Go read."―Django Wexler"An absolutely outstanding debut . . . [It has] all the heart and passion that great fantasy can bring in the hands of a master."―Myke Cole

This books takes the concept of mercenaries in a fantasy setting and turns it on it's head. In the world of the book mercenaries are treated like a combination of rock stars and or superheroes. Instead of looked upon with scorn as the are in other fantasy novels. In fact they are called Bands and are structured kind of like modern rock bands. With the leader of each individual group called the frontman and have five to seven members with at least one magic user/wizard. And the groups names often take their inspiration from classic rock tunes. When they are hired for a job called it's a "gig" by an agent called a "booker." Active groups are said to be Touring. Along the way, author manages to skewer fantasy tropes like trolls, orcs dragons, other magical creatures too numerous to mention, and the excesses of classic rock group stereotypes, like sex, drugs, alcohol, and the occasional random property damage. The book follows the exploits of Saga a former top merc band with a rep among the public and their peers like the Stones or The Beetles. They get back together for one last gig of a personal nature to rescue the estranged daughter of the groups frontman from a city under siege from a demonic horde incited by an old enemy. This is a darkly funny tale with plenty of twists, turns, narrow escapes, and outrageous action adventure. You find yourself laughing out loud and at times choked up by the raw emotion of these life long friends coming back together for one last time to save the day.

If looking for positive and negative feedback on this book don't read any further, there is nothing; not a word, situation, resolution, description, I would change, nothing. On its face a simple story - a man asking his old friends to help save his daughter from what they all know, is an impossible situation. And it remains a simple story.A funny, sad; sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes uplifting story where hard men demonstrate simple acts of humanity that convey more compassion than paragraphs of flowery language. I didn't need a thesaurus next to my bedside to read this book, and when you might, the author made fun of himself.Don't let this review confuse you, this is a band of fat, old, drunk, womanizing mercenaries- who just happened to live long enough to make a choice of who and what they want to be when the grow up, when glory isn't enough..I would recommend this book to anyone I know.Edit: Ok I lied The one thing I would change would be adding a chapter for the antagonists. The bones of his motivation are there but some flesh, his conflict, the compromises he needed to make - what he lost to assemble his mosh pit.

So, Kings of the Wyld.. Where to start?I suppose I will start by saying that this is the first book I felt compelled to write a review for. Not that I haven't read many good books; I have. Not that this book is in dire need of more champions; It isn't. But for a plethora of reasons that you will soon find out, should you pick up a copy and read it.I had heard good things about this book all over the internet but mostly from the Fantasy-Faction Facebook group. While all the praise certainly buoyed my confidence in my purchase, while browsing in the bookstore it was the amazing Richard Anderson cover that snapped the money out of my wallet and slapped it onto the counter at check-out.It was said to be a fun, fun book. A book with great action scenes and better characters. One that took inspiration (and attitude) from the author's newfound love of classic rock. Bands like RUSH, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Neil Young were an inspiration. It was said to have moments of great sadness and beauty. Maybe most of all, it was said to be a book that had an awful lot of heart.I am here to reassure you that it is all of those things, yet so much more.In a genre (mostly) stuck in the age of grimdark, KotW is a sweeping, veritable hurricane of crisp, wondrous fresh air.I love this book. I can tell you without doubt, that I will be enjoying it for years to come.I would recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in fantasy. I would urge it upon the fantasy fanatic. I will be buying a second copy for my shelf and lending the one I read to any friends whose mouths I can manage to pry open and force it down. The thing is though, I doubt I will need to. I have a good feeling that they will willingly gobble it down in a few large bites and enjoy it (almost) as much as I did.Buy this book.-SPOILERS BELOW-......................RIP Dane and Gregor. I will forever remember your childlike wonder and your beautiful heart.

The story: in a medieval setting of abundant monsters and magic, a retired band of adventurers, Saga, rallies to the desperate plea of one of its members whose swashbuckling daughter is trapped in a city besieges by unspeakable doom. Journeying through wild cities and dangerously populated landscapes, meeting a bewildering array of friends and foes both old and new, they race against time and fate to rescue a forlorn city, save a cherrished daughter, and, while they are at it and with no particular plan, spare the world of man from oblivion.Appealing features: written with skill and gusto, this tapestry of colourful characters weaves effortlessly through comedy, action and drama in equal measure. It's a fast-paced, gripping tale that can rival with any of the leading Fantasy books, an artful mix reminiscent of both Abercrombie and Pratchett.Criticisms: for once, none come to mind!

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Came in great condition. These "Who Was" series are the only books I have been able to convince my daughter to read and she loves them. I really enjoy when she tells me about all the little facts and details she has learned about the person. Our library is where she found them but she has read all they own, and I thought it would be special if she owned her own copy as well.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

These books are great for my third graders! They use these for their big biography projects and they offer tons of great info!

I am happy with my purchae

An interesting biography of Edison. However, it is a bit excessive in its content straining to the boring side for a read aloud to kids. My kids, for reference, can follow Magic Tree House chapter books with no issue and listen for 4 chapters or more with no wiggles. The Edison book, not so much. Still, they were glad to hear his story.

my kids all love the who/what was series.

What a great book! I thought my 4 year old was going to get bored by it but he loved it! A great way to teach them some history in a very fun written book. Will be buying more of this Who Was collection

This is ok as a plain old board book, but I was not happy with it as a touch and feel book. Several of the pages just have a shiny part of the picture that is not really a different texture. I really liked the farm book made by the same publisher so I was very disappointed that this was not made to the same standards.

Good for 6mo-2 years. It's kind of boring and you can't really make unique sounds for all of the objects.

This is a pretty good touch and feel book but it could have had a bit more touch and feel too it. But overall I know it's a good book because my 15 month old son likes to have us read it to him before he goes to bed most nights and he likes to point to a few of the pictures. Funny the ones he likes the most have the most "feel" to them. It's got great colors though and illustrated beautifully for a baby to learn to love to read and learn about things that go!

I was a bit disappointed at this cute book. Our son likes big trucks and cars. The touch and feel is what we bought it for, sensory development. There are some great touch pages. In between those are pages that have a smooth finish with a sparkle like design. That was unexpected and not as great as I would have liked.

Neat baby gift

i had high hopes for this book, especially because the pictures on amazon all indicated that the material in the book was patented. I expected textures, but really it's raised cardboard and shiny paper. Disappointed.

I got this for my 9 month old son for Christmas. He loves it and its very sturdy so can endure him banging, throwing and biting on it. I know that this will be a book that will grow with him as he becomes more interested in sitting and reading books as well as when he can label more of the pictures, etc. He is a definite boy so this book is very interesting to him with all the vehicles.

Love the touch and feel books! This one doesnt have as interesting textures to feel as some of the others. The ones that I'm accustom to are soft and furry textures ad this one is more feeling hard textures that are similar to what a baby feels all of the time on their high chair and car seat etc. We still enjoy it but just not Touch And Feels best book.
