#8,297 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I love Louise Penny and am reading her Chief Inspector Gamache novels in order, so I made a chronological list without paying much attention. When The Hangman's turn came up, my local library didn't have it, so I ordered the Kindle version. I started reading it and immediately noticed it hadn't picked up the thread of the previous novels. Now, all of these can be stand alone, but the characters are developed as one goes along, so references to past events are made. I also noticed this one just didn't have that deep level of philosophical thought and character development. Even descriptions seemed a little off. Then I was shocked to find it was so short--a novella--which I hadn't noticed when I ordered it. Now, all this might seem critical of a book to which I awarded 5 starts...but, I discovered AFTER finishing it that The Hangman was actually written for adult new readers and used a lower grade level of vocabulary. Wow! Holding it to that standard was something else. As a retired librarian, I have read several ANR (adult new reader) books and this one was so much better than any others I've read. It did not "talk down" to me and while I missed the usual French words and phrases found in her books, realizing this was also for French speakers to learn/practice English, allowed me to accept that easily. My respect for Ms Penny only grew once I realized she had written an easy-to-read book in English for those learning the language (or just learning to read at all) that was so compelling. We need more ANRs of this caliber.

If you’ve heard of Louise Penny and wonder why her Inspector Gamache mysteries are so popular, don’t start with this one, or you’ll never know what the fuss is about. This is a novella, really not much more than a long short story, tucked somewhere in the middle of the series. It’s an OK mystery, though I did guess the answer to the puzzle somewhat before the end, but it lacks the trademark character development, both among the series characters and among those specific to each story, that appears in her novels. The story includes only two of Penny’s police regulars and two of the denizens of Three Pines, her rural-Quebec version of Brigadoon, and it barely hints at the depth in which these characters are presented in the novels. (I particularly missed my favorite Three Pines character, grumpy elderly poet Ruth.) The mystery surrounding the main standalone character (the body found at the beginning of the story) is interesting and unraveled layer by layer with proper deliberation, but that’s about it.Just before I posted this review, I noticed another review saying that the novella was written for “emerging adult readers” and was kept at a simple reading level intentionally. I don’t remember seeing that before I bought it. I didn’t really notice the lower reading level, only the lack of character development. It may have a place for that particular audience, and my hat is off to Penny for trying to address their needs. However, unless you fit in that category or are such a die-hard Penny fan that you want to read everything she’s written about Inspector Gamache & Co. (which I could understand), I’d still recommend not bothering with this.

...written as a novella for "emerging adult readers" as part of a Canadian literacy project. It is written at Grade 3 level intentionally, and is not part of the ongoing series of Inspector Gamache/Three Pines novels. When reviewing the book, please keep this in mind. You can read more about it on Ms. Penny's website, which can be found easily by googling.

It is a great read, but also a fabulous wonderful read at night when you can't sleep and want to read something short. I just bought some other Good Reads Books. They are written for adults who are learning reading. They are also for late night short read for restless sleepers who want to read something not to long and get right to the point. Love it. Have bought 3 more tonight.

I needed a short break from the intense violence of some of the latest books I have read. This short story fit the bill perfectly. It was just enough of a return to my cozy little dream village of Three Pines and all its inhabitants to tide me over until I get to my next full Inspector Gamache novel, The Long Way Home later this year. Fans of the series should love The Hangman.

First Sentence: Armand Gamache didn't like what he was looking at, but then, few people would.A guest at the Inn and Spa in Three Pines is found hanged by a jogger. Inspector Armand Gamache and his deputy Jean-Guy Beauvoir are sent to investigate. The question is whether this is a suicide or murder. This novella was written for Canada's Literacy Project at the Grade 3 level for adult readers. The style and plot are very simple and, where characters in the series books, would use French words or phrases, English is used here. Even so, this is a wonderfully written story. The underlying question is "why?". Why was the man there? Whether by his own hand or another's, why did he die? There is another question of "why" but I refuse to give away a major plot point. This is yet another example of Ms. Penny's skill and quality of storytelling even for those of us way above Grade 3 level reading. Do not, however, confuse that for meaning the story has been `dumbed-down'. Not at all. It has all the elements that define an excellent tale with its strong sense of place, excellent characters, wonderfully done and natural dialogue. Although the structure and language may be fairly simple, the plot twist is not and the motive leaves us thinking."The Hangman" is complete unto itself and a wonderful read, no matter your age or reading level.THE HANGMAN (Pol Proc-CI Armand Gamache-Canada-Contemp) - ExPenny, Louise - Short StoryGrass Roots Press - 2010

Dirty Gert, by Tedd Arnold

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-Gert loves playing in dirt: digging holes, making mud pies, even eating it. Her parents indulge her earth-loving ways, leaving their daughter to spend most of her time with the chatty worms. While eating mud in the rain one day, the combination of soil and water causes Gert to put down roots and develop treelike appendages. Others are not so enthusiastic about her changes: her brother covers her with a trash can; the neighbors think she needs to be cleaned; and then the lawyers, news reporters, and Hollywood crews show up to capitalize on Gert's strange transformation. "The lawyers called. They were appalled!/No one had legalized her." The little girl-tree begins to wilt under all of the attention, so, in an anticlimactic ending, her parents bring Gert in to the safety of the house for a meal: dirt, of course. Arnold's cartoonlike big-eyed, big-headed characters give the story his signature touch of humor and are the book's strength. Gert's wild nature is evident in her three askew ponytails and the smudges of dirt that cover her face in nearly every illustration. The story is set almost completely in the backyard, but Gert is still seen from a variety of perspectives, including as a giant from a worm's-eye view. The rhyming text introduces great vocabulary words, like "photosynthesize" and "botanist," but readers never actually hear from Gert or learn of her thoughts about her transformation, which limits the depth of the story.-Marian McLeod, Darien Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Ever since she was a little “squirt,” Gert loved to play in dirt, a proclivity that led her to become a “soil internalizer.” Her parents are very accepting of how much time she spends in the dirt and how much of it she eats, but one day, when she stays out in the rain, Gert grows roots, sprouts leaves, and gets “photosynthesized.” After growing into a phenomenon tended by Hollywood and lawyers alike, her parents come to her aid by digging her up and setting her at the dinner table with the rest of the family, where they keep her happily fertilized with a plateful of dirt (which looks better than the peas everybody else is having). The colorful computerized drawings of large-faced humans are quintessential Arnold, and the running commentary made by a cadre of earthworms adds even more humor to the already outlandish scenario. While the story idea is slight in its realization, the punchy rhyming text helps make for a total package of silly, clean fun. Preschool-Grade 1. --Andrew Medlar

We love his books - especially any with Walter and William. The illustrations are entertaining and add a lot to the story as with all of his books. This book is about a little girl who loves to eat dirt and eventually turns into a plant. My 3 year old thinks the book is okay but my 9 year old says that book is sad. Gert gets overwhelmed by the attention she is getting from turning into a plant and begins to wilt. Her parents take her inside and water her. She gets healthy again but she is still a plant - living with her legs in a pot of soil. My 9 year old felt it was sad that she could not go back to being a little girl - maybe that was the point of the story but that was lost on my 3 year old and too sad of an idea for the older son. It is okay but certainly not his best book. Happy reading!!

We took this book out of the library and renewed it so many times that I had to buy it. My son loves it! And I love hearing him say "dityget"

We rented this book from the library and my daughter loved it so much I had to buy it for her. It is by far her favorite book. It is very clever and has a cute storyline.

My students love this book!

My daughter LOVES anything by Tom Arnold! This book is very cute and sends a message of self acceptance as well as acceptance of others.

Great story and illustrations.

LOve this story! Used it for a Tedd Arnold author study in my first grade class! They adored Gert and her dirt loving ways!

Great, I love it, terrific and in described condition, fast shipping. My grandbabies love this book.

I thought there was something quirky and unique about “Relentless Forward Progress.” The entire book is split up into short, digestible sections on every conceivable topic related to ultrarunning. Some sections have guest writers who are established ultra runners. If you love reading about running and/or are intrigued by ultras, then you are going to devour this book. Before buying “Relentless” I checked out some of the reviews. Most were overwhelmingly positive, but there were a few negative ones, and the recurring theme seemed to be that readers found the book a bit basic. I admit there was nothing earth-shattering here. Critics mentioned that the book isn’t so different from marathon training guides. This is also true. A lot of the topics, on things ranging from training runs to hydration to foot care, were similar to what you’d find in a marathon guide. The very simple fact is that an ultra isn’t radically different from a marathon in terms of training. You should probably still do speed work, tempo runs, easy runs, and long runs. I think there are a couple important points to consider with “Relentless Forward Progress”: first, you can’t please all of the people all of the time, meaning that there are going to be a range of audiences for this book, all of whom have different expectations. There are those people who’ve never run anything longer than a marathon and are considering the ultra distances. There are those (like me) who’ve experimented with 50Ks and 50 milers and are toying with the idea of 100 milers. Then there are the 100 mile vets who continue to read every how-to guide they come across in hopes of gleaning new insights. This last group may be somewhat disappointed by the surface-level topics Bryon Powell covers. He’s trying to reach as many people as possible, so by necessity he can’t be overly detailed. You’re going to get a taste of the things you’ll likely encounter when you start running ultras; that’s Powell’s goal, and he achieves it here. And in Powell’s defense, I don’t think any ultra training guide is going to satisfy certain runners because what they’re searching for is the panacea to ultras. The secret is that there is no secret. Every potential problem that crops up in a marathon, from blisters to chafing to hydration issues, gets multiplied many times over in an ultra. Throw in nutrition, trail running, night running, and sleep issues, and you’ve created a huge challenge for any athlete. And there’s no one book that will help you overcome these challenges. You have to just run the distances and learn from experience. Powell says as much. He basically writes that he can help speed up the learning curve but there’s no substitute for experience, no magic pill that will prevent the lowest lows of mile 70. Take Powell’s advice and put it into practice. Ultras themselves are as idiosyncratic as the people who run them. One person may be struggling at the same time another is doing great, and that same person might crush one 100 miler and DNF the next. The real secret to the 100 mile seems to be the mental angle—how to stay positive and keep moving forward—and I think that part is individual to each person. You’ve got to figure that out for yourself. But if you want some great hints on how to dress for rainy weather, how to prevent blisters, how much to run in training, etc., then read this valuable book.

I bought this book because many people on a trail running group mentioned that this book is basically a bible for ultra-running. My main complaint is that most of the advice in this book can be found in any standard marathon training book, so if you already have a bunch of running/training books, I don't know if this book is really necessary. It might be a great resource for some new runners though. I'm going to try out one of the training plans (I believe the book comes with at least 3 training plans) and I'll update the review once I have run my target race.

Very basic primary on ultras. Still worth the $. If nothing else, the basic parameters of the training plans are good guides because there's really not much out there on what you should do to have success in 50-100+ mile races. I'd suggest it to runners I coached. Some of the back and forth about a few of the topics seems unnecessary. I like it clearly states you shouldn't be using NSAIDs and it's dangerous to do so. I can't remember if the hydration part was "drink to thirst" or not, so it probably was, which is also good.

So as I was starting to consider running an ultra, this was a great book to have picked up. In some chapters, I want to cry before even considering starting training, but in most, it makes the people seem so much more human than some of the books I've read on the topic before. Mostly because most books are written by or about the top runners, so their "slow ultra speed" is my sprint speed, while this book shows a more human side to it all, without making it sound like it'll be a walk in the park. Highly recommend this to anyone considering doing an ultra.

Let me get this out before I say anything else: those solely looking for a page turner need not apply. This book does not function as a story; as it says in the title, its a guide. I bought this book just because I had read just about everything else about running, so I figured why not. Although I am slowly making a foray into ultramarathons, I was not thinking of using the book as it was intended for, merely, something to hold me over until I found the next great read. I took me a month to finish the book. Powell definitely does not embellish his writing here, just right to the point. Now my next point: This book exceeds its job as a guide to ultramarathons. It contains an exhaustive list of subjects to prepare the reader for their big race, ranging from the 50k to the 100 miler and beyond. I found myself nodding my head with inquisitive satisfaction quite often. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking at their first ultra, or even to those veterans looking to add some refinement to their training.

This book is fantastic, I highly recommend it to anyone wanting information on trail/ultra running. I am learning to trail run and am hoping to run an Ultra. I found this book a very fun and interesting read. I do not know if this book would be interesting to an experienced ultra/trail runner but it was for me. Starting to run trails leads to lots of questions. This book did a good job of answering most of the questions I had. I liked the information on identifying health issues (hydration, electrolyte levels, etc.) interesting and like having a information to help identify when I am doing things wrong and what the cause may be. The training plans also seemed very good and were explained very well, including how to customize them depending on your goals and training style. I found the book a quick read with lots of information. I think this book has helped jump-start my experience.
