While dumpster diving, the Spoons find previously unowned works of art by a great, reclusive painter, sure to bring hundreds of thousands or dollars auction. The kids who found the work want to give the proceeds to the family, sparking some jealously among the students, adult parents and school personnel. Then the paintings go missing and fingers begin pointing.The chapters are written from different perspectives, students and adults, and they include newspaper articles, letters, messages and narratives. The voices include Saba, Kevin and Kendra Spoon, Saba's superficial boyfriend, a foreign exchange student, the Kahn parents, 3 teachers, the headmistress, several parents, and an art appraiser. I didn't think the ART OF SECRETS was as much a mystery, because I didn't really care who took the paintings. I cared about why and the motivations of the characters in helping and accepting help. Billed as a YA novel. THE ART OF SECRETS will probably appeal to adults more than teens. YA age readers might be bored or uninterested in the politics between teachers and adult jealousies. As an adult I was.James Klise has penned a thought provoking novel about generosity and jealousy, helping others and benefitting, selflessness and selfishness, what we deserve and what we'll do to get that. I love how the Kahns' Muslim faith are just a small part of their characters, like the exchange student's Spanish heritage is a small part of who he is. Any of characters could have been from any country, faith or have any color skin. That's diversity done right.

I really enjoyed reading the Art of Secrets by James Klise, a librarian at a high school in the Chicago area. I am NOT a young adult, but after hearing him interviewed on NPR, I ordered it and read it. I loved the way he constructed it with a lot of different first person narratives. The story unfolded like a flower from a bud, and although he doesn't come out and give us answers, the answers are quite apparent if you think about it.

Granted, as a 60-year-old man, I'm not exactly the target audience for this book. But I enjoy a lot of books written for middle-schoolers; usually, when I've finished them, they go on the shelf to be re-read someday or get passed on to someone else to enjoy. "The Art of Secrets" is going straight into the recycling bin. I found the resolution of the plot to be both completely implausible and, more importantly, presenting a worldview that is way too dark and cynical for me to want to inflict it on a young person.I will not use any of the characters' names, but even my vague explanation will be likely to give things away early to those who read the book. So herewith the SPOILER ALERT!SPOILER ALERTSPOILER ALERTMy problem with the book is that the resolution of the plot requires that multiple characters turn out to be incredibly devious---I'm talking criminal-mastermind level plotting---despite almost 250 previous pages presenting them as nothing of the sort. So in addition to being incredibly (I'm using that word literally: not believably) devious, they also have to be pathological liars to have so convincingly presented themselves as innocent. Never mind that the people in question are of different ages and temperaments---they're all incredibly devious, pathological liars.I'm sorry, but that's not a view of reality that I want to share with a middle-schooler.Of course, there are other dark books for kids; "The Lord of the Flies" comes to mind, but in that case, a reader need only peruse the back cover to know what he or she is getting in for and can make an informed choice about whether or not to read the book. But in this case, the darkness comes out of the proverbial left field at the very end and changes the tenor of what had seemed to be a book about high school friendships and coming-of-age..The book is well written, and the characters all seem like believable people---until they don't. Nevertheless, I'm sorry for the time I invested in reading it. And I would be wary of anything else by the author unless there was good evidence that no equally nasty and implausible surprise awaited me at the end.

THIS WAS A JOY. THE JOURNAL TYPE OF CHAPTERS AND CHARACTER WAS GREAT. THIS WOULD BE GREAT TO TEENAGERS. THE ENDING WAS SUPERB AND A SUPRISE. ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE READ THIS YEAR.

(No young adult here)....I also heard the author's interview on NPR and decided to buy the book. Made for enjoyable reading with a very surprising ending. Good purchase!

I bought this for my 14 year old niece after hearing a good review of it on NPR. She was a little dubious about reading it at first the story title didn't grab her. However, one quiet afternoon she finally dove in and she really loved it. We had a long discussion about it. I would suggest it for young teen.

This. Disc will not open in an apple computer, hp computer, nor play in my bose stereo, car stereo, or DVD player. So I am not able to tell you if the story is any good or not.

I preordered this book because I knew it was going to be exceptionally good, as is everything offered by artist Jeanne Oliver. I own many of her fashion pieces and I follow her on social media and have long been an admirer and fan of everything she does. Once I received this book, I was actually blown away at how blown away I was. It far exceeded my expectations, which were pretty high to begin with. I will tell you what I love about it...I love the way she is so generous with her knowledge and her experiences. I love the way she talks conversationally. I love the way she is in the details of every single thing, so that you are not left saying, about ANYTHING..."I wish she would have included that..." -in fact, many times over, I was left thinking.... "wow, she even included that!" - the hardest part of finishing this book was that I wanted to stop every few pages and try what she was demonstrating and writing so eloquently about, but I knew if I did that I might not return to the book and finish it...so I devoured to cover to cover over about a week of evenings. The photography and photo styling is breathtaking too... so it's just a really pleasurable book to sit with and read. And a pleasurable book to sit and read is one thing, but this one also inspires action. This book makes you feel like you can do what she is teaching you to do, and it makes you WANT to do it. That is quite an admirable skill in this time of short attention spans and being on to the next thing. This will be my go-to book for art journaling inspiration and will also be the book that I recommend to others who are wanting to either get into art journaling or wanting to be re-inspired to begin again. I recommend this book wholeheartedly and if you haven't checked out everything else Jeanne Oliver does... I highly recommend you do that too! You won't regret it. Always a feast for the eyes, the heart and the soul. She is becoming legendary in her offerings and deserves every bit of praise she gets!

Easily the best book/magazine I have bought all year. Oliver is an excellent writer, her prose making reading such a pleasure. The authenticity of the author is felt through the pages and project she wants to take with you. It is very inspiring. Healing is so Important for self care. Oliver puts it front and center to draw from our life experiences to tell our own individual stories because they matter. All of them.I recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed.

I'm just gonna tell you what I said on Facebook earlier today:You guys. Seriously. I have no words for how good this book is. Which is rare.What Oliver's created here is completely unique. It's not just about making pretty pictures in a book. It's about excavating your soul's stories, collecting all the various threads that make you *you*, and putting them together to make art in a way that only you can.When I got my copy from Netgalley this morning, I thought I'd flip through it and go on with my day. Most art books, I go in, look at the techniques, see if there's anything new that I want to try in my own practice, and then, generally, they go on the shelf. Even the ones I like and end up keeping are often shelf-dwellers, waiting for me to need that particular technique.This is not how my morning went, y'all.By the second chapter or so, I was sitting in my comfy chair with a notebook, following a sidebar (just a sidebar!) of her advice to write down notes about all of your stories. Granted, she said to only take fifteen minutes or so. Two HOURS later, I was still scribbling notes and only made it to my late teens.Quick fact you may not know about me: I have a head injury. Got creamed by a drunk driver in 2003. There were days I forgot things like words and my own grandmother's name. There are large swaths of my life path that are foggy or I just don't remember.This morning, when I was making my scribbly list of stories, *I started remembering*, y'all. Things that were lost, stories that were foggy or forgotten.By the time I stopped for the time being (my hand was cramping), I had a WEALTH of new resources to draw upon. For me, for that one tip alone? I'd buy ten of these books.Then, though, she gets into her process, and through a whole host of absolutely gorgeous projects and unique techniques, she delves deep into those stories you've uncovered, and gives them the chance to be illuminated and seen. I've taken Jeanne's classes (which she has on her self-named site), and there are some projects that are repeats, just for the record. However, coming into them this time with another round of stories made the projects themselves new, as well.Oliver has put into the world not just a beautifully photographed and well-organized art resource, but a kind of soul-level tool for self-discovery here.I can not recommend it highly enough. It comes out in July. I suggest pre-ordering. Worth every penny, and about a million more.

My all-time favorite history-and-disease book. First read it as a teen many many years ago, and it probably played a part in focusing my interest in biology. Dr Zinsser shines through on every page, making it highly readable as well as good science (and sociology) history.I highly recommend it.

Interesting and witty read. For anyone interested in the history of Typhus Fever, or just the transmission of disease in general. And/or for people interested in history and/or science. A one-of-a-kind book.

This book met all of my expectations, and more. It was interesting to read the stories of how diseases and parasites had played major roles in the history of the world. A fascinating book.

Even though this book was required for a class, I found it to be entertaining and informative. This book is about how "vermin" have influenced humans throughout history, and why we have certain perceptions about rodents and insects. The book is pretty comprehensive, covering human history from the birth of agriculture to the industrial age to the present day. I think of rodents as misunderstood, so this really resonated with me and helped me understand why some people hate them so much. This book is a pretty short, quick read, so if you're interested in the history of rodents, bugs, and disease, check it out.

Fascinating history of critters we don't think about, but should!!

I love this book! Originally published in 1934, it has withstood the test of time. Clearly, the writer loves his subject. His writing is sly, witty and informative, as he draws the reader in to a growing appreciation of this unusual subject.

having sold most of the products in the book from the first model 1964 205 right up to the 1970s it has brought back plenty memories I am now retired after around 60 years radio engineering

lots of information about Grundig satellit radios. Great collector's book. The book is filled with details on every model, again useful to collectors.

This book shows black and white photographs of the line of Grundig Satellit radios from their inception. It includes the more recent Grundig Satellit 800 which was produced by the Eton company. The newer Grundig Satellit 750 is not included in this book if you are wondering.The author, obviously well versed in these radios, presents a chronological listing of the line of Grundig Satellit radios and I thank him for that work. I am glad to own this book.I gave the book only three stars for two main reasons. The sentence structure and consequent choice of words was very distracting to me and often prevented me from understanding just exactly what the author was saying. He obviously knows his subject but English is not his first language and, because of this, the information transfer to me has gaps.The second reason is that the grayscale photographs are poorly presented. They appear grainy or as low resolution images. He does mention that if you go to his website there are higher resolution color images there. I will do that in the near future.Books, such as this one, are very useful over time. Collectors are kept informed and so are more likely to seek models that they wouldn't have known about, thus making the hobby of radio collecting interesting and active. So I would recommend you purchase this book while it is still available.I would love to read a book about the inside, behind the scenes, events that led up to the production of any or all of these radios. But that would take an author interviewing and researching those people and documents that are still available. Then, once the book was produced, it would need be critiqued by someone who spoke and wrote the language fluently for the country it was to be published in. Otherwise, too much would be lost in the translation; to 'coin' a very old phrase.By the way, I read this entire book in two relatively short sittings. I will seek out and examine the author's website soon.

The writings of Dr. David Jeremiah continue to engage my interest not only because he simply writes well BUT because he uses the information in the Bible as it should be used. That is: not just to fill in the Sunday services in any Church, but to add meaning to what has become a fearful and complicated life fraught with many pitfalls which includes: a media that is no longer reliable as their only interest seems to be either reporting the BAD or creating their own bad by asking questions to people of note that will ensue negative responses. AND thus I began my quest for peace and honesty that can only come from a supreme being that is on a much higher level than any of us. This particular book takes the Lord's Prayer and using bible references analyzes the contents of each line of the prayer. I read it through almost without putting it down and find myself picking it up and reading parts of it again and again. I have several other of his books but this one gives me some hope and peace of mind that the World cannot give!

At this point in my life, and 74 years of age, I sincerely find that I am still a novice when it comes to prayer. I am very impressed that it took a bout with cancer to direct David Jeremiah, already a fantastic preacher and spiritual leader, to make him realize how important developing a consistent prayer life and maintaining a journal was. The key seems to be making sure that a journal is kept of your daily walk, your daily readings, your prayers and your experiences in the world. I plan to renew my efforts to maintain journaling as I did set for several years and then we'll pass those journals on to my grandchildren.

Invigorating book! This book has a great analysis of the Lord's Prayer. It shows how you can implement the prayer into your own prayer life.This has helped me rethink what I should pray about. I took notes on some of the many lessons I learned from the book. Highly recommended!

This book is the guide to C#, especially if you want to focus on the language.I should disclose I am an experienced C# programmer, but after not doing as much for a while I jumped back in with this book and it really got me ready.It contains examples, but also explains clearly each concept. It's thorough and detailed in many areas where others aren't. It isn't one of those books that focuses on forms and Visual Studio, this gives you a solid language foundation.You're going to find this book covers a very wide range of the language and lots of concepts. A must have if you're going to do any serious C# development.

The focus is more on what is going on behind the scenes and how .net works. It will make you a much better C# programmer vs. teach you how to code. Probably best as a secondary source / guide. Great book but don't make it your first C# book. Probably best digested in small doses. Also by skimming through the book you can get a high level (i.e. generalized idea) of different advanced features of C#. Not a whole lot of code but there is tons of examples on MSDN. Overall well written and not boring.The only negative for me was that sometimes I wished the explanations were a bit simpler or straightforward for ~5 - 10% of the material. But this wasn't a big deal--there is so much info on youtube, MSDN, and various blogs. Probably is best as a reference or 2nd C# book. Overall I recommend it.

I must confess though that I haven't read this "cover to cover" yet. My initial impression is very favorable. But, if it was meant to be (as the cover art suggests) it is completely re-written and updated for C# 5.0. Some of the explanations in this book are more in-depth and there is less dependency on code examples than in Liberty's "C#" that always seemed to introduce idioms that hadn't been fully discussed in the text. The subjects (chapters) that I've read seem very clearly written. I look forward to a thorough read.

This is just how I think a book about programming should be. Starting from a fairly basic level, it gives you a complete overview without going into unnecessary details. Throughout the book, the author explains the reasoning for the language design, be it historical, related to Java, Win32 or something else. He also provides best practices, and last but not least: the code examples are excellent! The have the minimal number of lines needed to show the approach, and never give you the feeling you need to have Visual Studio open to really understand.

I love this book. I have the Building Windows Applications VB.NET/C# book that Jesse Liberty co-authored and with this book you have an indispensable pair of developer books. Lots of neat little tricks in here.

Great book for version 5.0. Easier than Maruc C# to follow along with. Good examples, and easy to read.

Well written book that I use often. Able to jump to variety of topics and learn them deeply, quickly with good flow. Many times it's much better than searching for a topic on the web.

Have to agree with most of the other reviewers. This is an excellent book. Took advantage of "Buy Used" and got a good deal. You'll find that working through the examples will give you a comprehensive understanding of both C# and the .Net Framework. Will be looking for more from Ian Griffiths.

This 9th Edition of Coe's The Maya, now co-authored with eminent Maya scholar Stephen Houston, is a major improvement over the last several additions. Houston's expertise in Maya writing means that the book is up-to-the-minute on many issues relating to Classic Maya religion and courtly life, and the chapter on "Maya Thought and Culture" has been almost completely re-written to reflect Houston's expertise on the subject. Similarly, this edition rolls in some major recent discoveries about Preclassic Maya civilization which are most welcome, and an appendix has been added listing the names of significant Maya rulers and the dates known for their reigns, which will be helpful for those trying to puzzle through references to specific characters in Maya history.Houston's contributions are also noteworthy for incorporating bite-size summaries of the ideas laid out in his own books for specialists, including brief treatments of morality and personhood, gender roles/norms, and the material world that will be familiar to readers of, say, The Memory of Bones, The Classic Maya, or The Life Within.The illustrations are wonderful, and there are even more of them than in previous editions. Some images that are exceedingly hard to find have been worked into the present edition, which alone are worth the cost of the book.My only real gripe is that the style of the prose is, at times, distractingly dated. In part this is because portions of the text are unchanged (or barely changed) from the original 1966 edition, at which time the book's target audience would presumably have understood the references to Pilgrim's Progress and been comfortable with the occasional Latinate stylistic flourishes. These days, however, a typical college-aged (or even college-educated) reader is unlikely to find such flourishes helpful or accessible. Some of these, such as a reference to a goddess that is "easy with her virtue" (p. 255) and "dwarves and other malformed people" who comprise "the most bizarre courtiers (at least from our vantage)" (p. 93), are likely to distract or alienate, rather than engage, a younger readership.That being said, this is still the best book going for someone who wants to do some basic "reading up" on the Maya before visiting ruins or wading into a more detailed treatment like Sharer and Traxler's The Ancient Maya. The 9th edition is a major step forward in terms of its content, and I look forward to following The Maya through many editions into the future.

If you're expecting to get a clear, simple story of what the Ancient Maya were "really like," sorry, you won't get it here. What you WILL get is a very thorough, but very readable, survey of the challenging archeological history of the Ancient Maya that makes it impossible to give simple answers about their culture. Where answers are available, though, this book presents them squarely into context, and shows how the scholars got to their conclusion. As a result, it's also an excellent field guide for tourists -- for every Mayan site large and small, Coe explains what to look for, and how it furthered our understanding.

This, the 9th edition of the book, contains updated information based by on both field excavations and academic research. Excellent and detailed review of Mayan civilization through the Late Post-Classic. Coverage of both thematic subjects , e.g., history, art, writing; as well as all major and many less prominent Mayan sites including integrated information on thematic issues. Maps included for the three major (Pre, Classic, Post) eras showing Mayan cities (but not contemporary ones, which would have been helpful). A variety of photos from different sources are included as well as a significant number of well- done drawings. Very useful references appear at end of volume. At 900+ pages not an easy read but writing is lucid with a minimum of academic jargon. Contains intro to Mayan cuneiform writing but more extensive coverage is available in other recent publications ( see especially Teadung Maya Art, by stone and Zender, 2011).

For scholarship and completeness this book deserves SIX stars out of five. Unfortunately I was looking for something less scholarly and more accessible. Lots of material on architecture, art, and demographics but the story is too deep and complex for the casual reader.

This was a very interesting book that helped me fill in some history that I had not learned ( or forgot) in the past. There was a huge amount of detail in this book that made reading all the way through, but it was also interesting enough to keep me reading.My major complaint is that there were not enough maps to help the reader keep track of all the places described, especially because the narrative jumped around quite a bit.Before I read this book I watched several programs on TV about the Mayan civilization that has greatly expanded based on the ground penetrating radar that has revealed many formerly unknown cities and temples. I recommend this book to anyone else who saw those shows and wants more information.

Not sure why, but I have always had a fascination with the Mayan culture. So looking for a book for a trip, I ran across this book and I am glad I did. This book with several updates is not the easiest book to read and is more like a textbook than a book for pleasure. However, it definitely leaves no stone unturned and that background is fascinating as well. While after reading the book I am still no expert on the subject of the Maya I do believe that I have a much great understanding of their culture, way of life and struggles. I am currently looking to book a trip to the region to see some of the ruins.

Coe and Houston have made this edition the best ever. (We have the 7th edition and have read others over the years). Succinct, clear and comprehesive; a must for any Mesoamerican library!

This is an excellent text book, full of facts and occasionally a few paragraphs of prose in story form. The author has a first hand knowledge of the research into the Mayans and traces a path from prehistoric times through through to the population of five million Mayans inhabiting today the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a shame that the spanish invaders of 1530 and beyond have obliterated much of the history and meanings of the many glyphs. There is still a lot to uncover in the jungle the same as the buried Egyptian civilization under the sand.

I am into pet healing and crystals, so this book was recommended to me by an instructor for a crystal healing class that I am currently enrolled in. I love this book! It has a lot of great info on what each crystal does for which ailments for various types of pets. I also love the gem elixir section on how to heal pets for various issues with particular crystal elixirs. It also gives real life stories of people and pets who used them and the results they got. I also liked the handy reference guide showing where to buy some of these types of products.

I love this book. The case studies are lovely, and there is a lot of useful information. It describes how to make and use elixirs, and suggests stones for many possible issues and ailments. I have used techniques learned in this book to help my elderly cats live with kidney disease.

This book gives me better insight on how to treat my pets without medication. I used the crystals in the book for my dog. It relaxed and energized him while he was suffering from a heart condition. Very helpful....

Amazon always wants to know why the 5-star rating! Here are several good reasons: 1st ...there are no grammatical errors or typos. I know that sounds odd to mention, but I read copious numbers of books each year. Many of them are not edited well and there are enough errors to be distracting....not this book! Thank you for such careful editing. 2nd: a very well-developed storyline. The plot and the idea are always clear and very interesting to follow...enjoyable because there is no "muddy" part...all fits together to create a beautiful story that actually made me the reader, feel invested in the outcome . 3rd: character development is superb. Each person is so vivid and fits into the story perfectly. I loved this book because it is a real novel...not a simple book that is weak and short. This is your first book Lauren? Wow! You have what it takes. This as good as it gets....at least by my definition. Thank you for giving me a wonderful few hours to be lost in the pleasure of an excellent read.

The Hideaway is filled to the brim with secrets, and it bursts with a transformative energy, as it too is transformed.As a bridge between past and present, the Hideaway enriches the inner lives of a grandmother and granddaughter who both come to know it on their own terms. I enjoyed the parallel storylines in this book, and found these narratives to hit just the right balance of depth and lightness - illuminating the needs and desires of these two women, while revealing their quirks and - yes, even their playful sides, in a beautiful ode to the human experience.This book may cause you to look a little deeper at yourself, as you examine what you really want in your life. This book may also inspire you to look a little deeper at others - including the elderly generation, whose rich and important tales deserve to be told.

I loved this book. It is a story of love and loss and coming on the other side stronger and wiser. The characters are very relatable and believable. This was the first novel by this author but was written like a seasoned writer. I appreciated the wholesome way she chose to write this love story and if she gives in to the pressure to write smut I will no longer be a fan. Recommend to anyone who loves romance novels with unexpected plot twists and turns. Bravo! A must read!

I loved, loved, loved this book. The story that's told is kind of unique and tells how a woman runs away from a bad marriage in a time when society thought a woman should quietly stay in her place while her husband cheated. The story unfolds as Sara Jenkins (a successful shop owner in the French Quarter of New Orleans) receives notice her grandmother "Mags" has passed away, leaving her a ramshackled B&B (The Hideaway) in Sweet Bay, Alabama. Raised by Mags after the death of her parents, Sara, feels an obligation to go back to the old place, but has no intention of keeping it.One of the conditions of the will is that Sara return the old house to its original glory. Part hippie, part eccentric beach bum, Mags was never what could be considered an conventional grandmother and some of the outrageous outfits and hats she wore embarrassed Sara as a child ... that's the reason she left. So, in Sara's mind, it's only a case of taking care of whatever needs to be done before putting the old relic on the market to be sold. However, once she arrives, she realizes there's a lot more to the house than she remembered or ever imagined. When she discovers a hidden box that belonged to her grandmother, Sara goes on a journey she never imagined undertaking as she learns the real story of her grandmother and what she was running from.I couldn't help but be caught up in Mag's story and appreciate how brave she was to set out on her own. This is a very moving story and sad in places. I highly recommend it.

I wish I could give this book four stars, but the legal real estate parts are so wrong that I can't get past it. I know it added drama to the story but the author should have done a better job of learning the law. The ending was somewhat obvious but that didn't detract from it being a good story. Probably a solid 3 and a half star offering in my opinion.
