Not a fan of the Alfred's empire in general, but these note spellers are very useful for students of all ages who are just beginning to read the grand staff. I like the fact that intervals are emphasized in addition to note names.

Alfred is becoming my go-to for both new and more advanced students. The books fit together well, the theory is understandable and fun, my kids are playing actual music much more quickly. It also leaves me more room for selecting other music that fits each student.

This book is very helpful for the beginning piano student. At this stage they really need a book like this to help them understand lines and spaces and 2nds, thirds, fourths and fifths. I've been teaching piano for 60 years and would recommend this book to all piano teachers.

This is the second level of piano books, and my wife and I (both musicians who played through college and played with some local groups, after college) both like the selection of songs and skills in these books, and our son likes the notespeller in particular, because it help him learn to read both staves.

I bought this for my 10 year old but he felt it was too simple. It works well to teach him the notes but he got tired with it too quickly. He said he would have stayed more interested if it had a tune. However, its what his piano teacher recommended.

I really like this entire series. Very easy to use for the children.

Daughter started piano practice. These are the books that her teacher asked for. They are perfect.

Excellent instructional book for my 16 year old who is learning piano for the first time. She is picking it up quite well. Book is clear and concise, and perfect for her age group.

I'm an American and I've lived and worked in West Africa for over 5 years (3 of them as a Peace Corps volunteer). I've found that it's incredibly challenging to peal away the cultural onion, especially in writing. It took me three years before I felt that I had a grasp on the rhythm and flow of the community I was living in, including the styles of communication (nonverbal communication, decoding indirectness), the practice of saving face, concepts of time, concepts of power, attitudes towards uncertainty, family life, the boundaries of friendship, decision-making when living in extreme poverty, etc. There is so much difference. You have to marinate in the difference to become aware of it, and then adopt the difference to understand it.Katherine Boo is blessed with perception, awareness and understanding. I was blown away by her ability to capture the everyday judgements, intentions and attitudes of the residents of Annawadi and to provide an intimate looks into the oppression, corruption and abuse of poverty.

 This is an astonishing book which I finished in two sittings. It's really three books in one:-- It reads like a novel, even a thriller, not a book of nonfiction. Katherine Boo drops you into the action from the very first page: a diligent and principled boy escaping from the authorities for a crime he didn't commit. She gets you inside the head of the 16-year old garbage collector, his fears, his motivations, his rat-infested pile of trash which is his only hiding place. From there, she radiates out into the entire slum of Annawadi, into the minds of few dozen other characters from the 3000 families huddled around a sewage lake next to the gleaming Mumbai Airport and its luxury hotels.-- It's an extraordinary feat of reporting. For the central event of the book, Boo does 168 interviews. Additionally, she digs up 3000 government documents (no mean feat in the Indian bureaucracy) and spends 4 years of being right there with these folks. As a result, you come to understand the interconnectedness of all the lives of these complex, talented, vibrant people: their ethnic, religious and caste strife; their dealings with systemic corruption wherever they go; and the wages of crushing poverty, how they adapt to it, how they hope to escape to a better life. The suffering is real and deep, yet somehow Katherine Boo conveys the heartbreak without being preachy or sentimental.-- It's also a call to action. You cannot read this book without having it soften your heart, expand your circle of compassion, understand the global consequences of everything we do, and have greater gratitude for all the privileges many of us take for granted.The writing is also fluidly beautiful. I live in Brazil, a country of great social inequality, but even so the misery and cruelty shown in Behind the Beautiful Forevers is impressive. This work, winner of the 2012’s National Book Award and written by Pulitzer winner Katherine Boo, is the result of three years she spent in Annawadi, a slum in Mumbai, India.The title is a reference to an outdoor of Italian luxury mosaics that faces the city’s modern international airport; and Annawadi is right behind, like a black humor joke. It is a place of hunger and constant disease. Where people sleep in the middle of trash and are bitten by rats during the night. Where the fight for survivor surfaces a greedy and cruel side in the neighbors, the police corruption and politics. A place where people supplement their meager diet with rats and frogs from a fetid lagoon. Annawadi shows the combination of the darkest side of globalization with the Indian cast system, defined in the book as “the most perfectly oppressive labor division system ever conceived”.Most of the story revolves around a Muslim family in the place of Hindu majority. They are accused of being responsible for the suicide of a one-legged woman. She set fire to herself because the renovation of a shared wall made dust fall in her rice, and wanted to teach a lesson to the neighbors that went too far. The lawsuit against the father of the family and his son extends for years and becomes a nightmare, revealing an endemic corruption in each and every level of the official system. The Indian bureaucracy seems like a big machine to forget the poor.“In the West, and among some in the Indian elite, this word, corruption, had purely negative connotations; it was seen as blocking India’s modern, global ambitions. But for the poor of a country where corruption thieved a great deal of opportunity, corruption was one of the genuine opportunities that remained.”One day the Indian press does visit this place of poverty and injustice because of a death. Of a horse. A few days before, a garbage collector was ran over and died after pleading for help for hours in an active road. They took him out of there when he was already dead and the coroner determined – without an autopsy – that he died of tuberculosis, so that it wouldn’t smudge the region’s statistics.The facts are amazing, and the execution of Behind the Beautiful Forevers too. The author used over a thousand hours of video, photographs and audio interviews to write the book. And Boo also has an incredible sensibility to find the right stories and the literary talent to transcribe them.One of the best non-fiction books I have read. A deep immersion in an incredible theme, with incredible execution, multiple sources, long time of research. A must-read for journalists, those interested in modern India, or any human being.

I am moved by this book. The increasing gap of wealth is a problem, and this well documented biography of life on the poor side of the fence is moving and disturbing, particularly because this trend seems to be escalating everywhere on the globe. The presentation is not judgmental. Instead, it is a window into the lives of the poor, their hopes, and their despair. Most readers have likely already imagined what this life is like, and their impressions will likely be consistent with what they find in this book. While reading the book, however, I learned that living this life has dimensions I had not thought to consider. I felt my knowledge was lifted from preconceived notions to being that of a witness. It is powerful.

About the Author

Herman Melville was born on August 1, 1819, in New York City, the son of a merchant. Only twelve when his father died bankrupt, young Herman tried work as a bank clerk, as a cabin boy on a trip to Liverpool, and as an elementary schoolteacher, before shipping in January 1841 on the whaler Acushnet, bound for the Pacific. Deserting ship the following year in the Marquesas, he made his way to Tahiti and Honolulu, returning as an ordinary seaman on the frigate United States to Boston, where he was discharged in October 1844. Books based on these adventures won him immediate success. By 1850 he was married, had acquired a farm near Pittsfield, Massachussetts (where he was the impetuous friend and neighbor of Nathaniel Hawthorne), and was hard at work on his masterpiece Moby-Dick. Literary success soon faded; his complexity increasingly alienated readers. After a visit to the Holy Land in January 1857, he turned from writing prose fiction to poetry. In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866 to1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, on September 28, 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and uncollated; packed tidily away by his widow, it was not rediscovered and published until 1924.Andrew Delbanco was born in 1952. Educated at Harvard, he has lectured extensively throughout the United States and abroad. In 2001, Time named him “America's Best Social Critic” and in 2011 he was awarded a National Humanities Medal. Two of his previous works, The Puritan Ordeal and Melville: His World and Work  received the Lionel Trilling Book Award at Columbia University, where he is Director of American Studies and Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities. He lives in New York City with his wife and two children.Tom Quirk is Catherine Paine Middlebush Professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I read Moby-Dick several times in college almost forty years ago. Now I'm taking a night class and reading it with life experience of forty years. Awe is the feeling that constantly gets evoked as I read. Why awe?Capacious. That is the word that repeats again and again in my head. Moby-Dick is a vibrantly colored hot air balloon that keeps growing in size as I read it. First, Melville's subject is the sperm whale, the largest creature on earth. But we don't just learn about the sperm whale but about all whales. Then we learn about whaling and its nobility. Here is where it gets very interesting. We participate in whaling, its skill, equipment, courage, risks and economy AND about how it results in the gruesome destruction of the whale. We feel the horror inflicted on the whales and we feel the nobility of the activity that slaughters them. Melville doesn't allow us to avert our eyes either to the daring of whaling or to the viciousness of the slaughter. That is where the book inflates even more because he holds both perspectives equally which is a much larger place than if he had taken sides.The book also foreshadows modernism by using a variety of narrative techniques; theater, pure narration, encyclopedic explanations and subjective interior monologues. Melville is constantly breaking up the narrative with omniscient recitations of fascinating information about his subject matter. And like Ulysses or the Waste Land, he piles on the reference to Shakespeare, the Greeks, Christianity and the Hebrew traditions.There are many references with regard to Ahab and the Whale regarding evil and Satan. Yet Ahab has great respect and reverence for Moby Dick. Ahab himself knows he is obsessed and but can have great compassion like his feelings for the lowly addled Pip. So yes there is evil afoot in the book but it isn't the kind that that creates simple polar opposites. As Ahab describes Moby-Dick (has) `an inscrutable malice sinewing through it' that describe the book as well. There is evil and there is also goodness that coexists in the book making the reader feel that he has to take sides. If the reader resists this temptation he or she will experience the awe of a deep and ever expanding mystery.

"Moby-Dick," the Third Norton Critical Edition edited by Hershel Parker, the foremost Melville scholar, is a leviathan of a Melvillean treat and brings Melville into the 21st century. Melville wrote in "White Jacket..." " the books that prove most agreeable, grateful and companionable are those we pick up by chance here and there... those that pretend to little, but bound by much." There is so much added to this superb third edition of "Moby-Dick," including the splendid portrait of Ahab on the cover by Oleg Dobrovolski.In the well-written preface, Hershel Parker clearly indicates how the different Norton editions published in 1967, 2001 and 2017 addresses the times and issues of their publication dates. Parker describes why Melville means so much more to us today then he did to his contemporaries and how our vision of Melville has changed from 1967 such as global warming, the extinction of species and human overpopulation. Parker mentioned that Chapter 105 "... Will He Perish?" of Moby-Dick" is read differently today. No longer do we believe as Melville did "we account the whale immortal in his species."Of course the book contains the authoritative text pioneered by Parker and Harrison Hayford. In this case with numerous added notes. Then Hershel Parker has written a new chapter, "Glimpses of a Melville as a Performer." This section clearly shows the talented Melville as a debater, actor, raconteur, lecturer and a master storyteller thru the eyes of his contemporaries. One of my favorite chapters that appears in all editions deals with whaling and whale craft with nautical terms and the well-illustrated whaling industry section.There is so much new and important material in this third edition. Highly recommended is reading the "Melville Revival 1879-1927."In conclusion it was exciting to read the new rich material in this third edition. Anyone interested in Melville, "Moby-Dick" or reading this classic piece of literature for the first time, needs to have this latest edition on his or her bookshelf. The essays at the end by some of the outstanding Melville scholars are an enriching experience. Walter Bezanson, Harrison Hayford, Greil Marcus, Timothy Marr, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Wyn Kelley, Robert K. Wallace, Jonathan Letham and Robert Payne takes us on a voyage and comprehensively bring "Moby-Dick" into the 21st century by addressing the present generation. They cover such "Moby-Dick" topics as the character of Ishmael; the reading and rereading of the book; the "Moby-Dick" in popular culture; the surprising proliferation of "Moby-Dick" public reading marathons; its influence in the arts and even a discussion of the song of whales. This is truly a "mighty book" on "Moby-Dick." When you read this volume, you will have a whale of a time!

I tried. I really tried. Multiple times. But the page after page describing all the different types of whales in the most minute of detail, and the sentences that stretch so long that by the end of them I'd realize I couldn't figure out for the life of me what point he was trying to make. I finally decided life is to short to torture myself with a book I'm just not enjoying, and I moved on. Maybe I'll try again in another 10 years.

A very enjoyable listen. Well narrated and takes a long time to get through, my two main requirements for an audiobook :). I tried reading this when I was young (luckily never given it as an assignment) and it is a tough read. Herman Melville was a master of the poetic phrase and it is beautiful to listen to but a trudge to read imho. A true American classic of the dangers of revenge and mob mentality. It also provides a time-machine like glimpse into the powerful American whaling industry and once again demonstrates the American concept (for good or bad) that whatever the world does we will outstrip it. I was especially pleased with the authors (narrators) view on the belief that mankind could never kill enough whales to endanger their numbers in the ocean and provides an interesting analogy separating their killing from the American Buffalo. Sadly, little did he know of where technology and seafaring were headed just a few decade later. I spent .99 for the kindle book and got the audio for free so I count it as money well spent.

I do a good deal of oral storytelling, and was hoping that these would be a useful resource. They are not. It's possible that a good enough storyteller could elaborate some of them into something that an audience would enjoy, but it would take a good deal of effort.The most interesting thing about the collection for me was seeing versions of stories I already knew from other sources, including one from Boccacio. In each case, the Juha version was much weaker than the version I knew. Which is the original and which the copy I cannot tell--the book provides no useful information about the dates of composition of the stories, and my guess is that they were all collected from current usage, although I gather that there are Juha stories from much earlier. Internal evidence, such as the presence of a musket in one story, suggests that at least some of them are recent enough to have been copied from an earlier European source.

It is supposed to contain funny tales about Geha. After I read a number of pages with great patience without finding a single funny tale I sent the book to my garbage can.

I am baffled at the review penned by my learned colleague, who saw fit to assign one star. His evidently Middle Eastern surname gives me pause, but I discern more sour grapes than legitimate analysis. I find the material extremely funny, revealing much about the cultural mores of the Arabic peoples and also providing good, honest, clean laughs. The material pokes fun at government officials, the wealthy, and the "learned" as well as demonstrating simple-minded "dummy" jokes. I also recognize material found elsewhere variously packaged, such as in the guise of Sicilian anecdotes ("Giufa," with an accent grave over the A, they call him), and one or two stories recognizable from the fables of Aesop or--as the Armenians call him when you see the material packaged as "theirs"--Olompianos with a Polish-style slash through the L.The book provides ideal light reading and, for those who don't know much about the culture of the Islamic peoples, will also proffer the rudiments of an education therein. Never mind sour-pussed reviewers who dare to contradict my authoritative opinions!

Book was a disappointment. Literal translations of phrases and dialogue do not convey the subtlety of the punchlines of the stories which are usually aphorisms

I bought this book after hearing the author speak about it on NPR. I was expecting a book about how body issues effect girls and women in our society. Instead I read a book that should have been called, "My Gross Anatomy" because for the most part, it only addresses issues that the author has personally experienced such as excessive hairiness, lice,and digestive issues. The author is amusing, but much of the humor is coarse and sophomoric with plenty of silly analogies and after a while I became frustrated with the juvenile humor. Ironically, the author does do quite a lot of research into each of her personal issues. (I imagine that a book about pregnancy is next...) I think that if you appreciate this type of humor you might really like this book. I was looking for an interesting book about how body issues effect girls/women but this book really didn't appeal to me. I learned a lot of random facts but did not find that the book had a central theme other than Mara Altman has a lot of body issues and enjoys talking about them. It could have been a great book since the author knows how to write and is a really good researcher.

I’ve read her words and digested her thoughts with a pretty continuous chuckle and outright laughter along with “oh, I didn’t know that” in between. She has a delightful way of talking about what is usually not talked about and brings all topics comfortably to the table. I look forward to following her creative journey. Bravo!

I just finished reading Gross Anatomy and I loved every second of it! It was part hilarious memoir, part accessible scientific deep dive into the hows and whys of really interesting (but not for “polite company”) things like: sex sounds, fainting and female body hair. One of my favorite books in years and I can’t wait to pass it around to sisters and friends.

This book is a joy to read. Thoughtful, well-researched, hilarious, and occasionally slightly disgusting, this personal dive into many stigmatized topics is definitely worth the read!

Wow. Every female should read. Then her hubby too! Very funny and yet liberating and uplifting at the same time. A great read for any women who sometimes thinks she's the ONLY ONE with that problem, or the women who just needed to lighten up a bit.

I love, love, love this book. Mara wrote about things I’ve struggled with (and things I never would have thought of) and made me laugh out loud a lot. She is clever and creative. I loved her clever Table of Contents and there is “wallpaper”on some of the pages that has pictures of the parts of the body to which she has referred. And who would have thought to title a chapter “The Eleventh Toe?” Wait ‘til you see what it is. So much fun. Write more, Mara! I can’t wait.

This book is hilarious and so normalizing. As a woman there are so many aspects of my body that I never discussed with anyone because I thought it was weird, taboo or TMI. Mara jumps right in and answers the questions we’ve been asking ourselves but we’re too afraid to say out loud. I’m loving this book and plan to buy for several friends I know will enjoy the candidness of Mara’s thoughts and research.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and passed it along to a friend when I finished it. I am a high school English teacher, and I bought it thinking I would add it to my classroom library when I finished it, but I found a lot of the content to be a bit too sexual for that purpose. For me, though, it was thought-provoking and often literally laugh-out-loud funny.

NATure reserves Some of the world’s finest nature reserves and protected areas packed with wildlife can be found in Jordan. Its landscape of deserts and their oasis, mountains blanketed with pine trees, wetlands, rich green valleys created by its network of wadis and the remarkable coral reef ecosystem and its abundance of vividly coloured fish in the Gulf of Aqaba where Jordan meets the Red Sea provide one of the most unique combinations of natural wildlife habitat. Add to that the Dead Sea and you could be forgiven for thinking that Jordan has it all.  There are seven nature and wildlife reserves, along with the Dead Sea and the Aqaba Protected Area, with at least six more sites being considered for reserve status. Add to this, more areas currently being studied for their biodiversity, and you have a country that recognises the importance of its fabulous flora and fauna, and takes all steps to protect it. The two most northerly official nature reserves are the Ajlun Nature Reserve and Dibeen Forest. Located about 90 minutes by road north from Amman, the Ajlun Nature Reserve is a wilderness of dense woodlands full of evergreen oak, carob and pistachio trees. In spring it becomes a rainbow of colour as anemones and rockroses cover its forest floor. Here, numerous birds and mammals thrive.  Nearby is the Dibeen Forest, Jordan’s newest reserve and home to more than 17 endangered wildlife species. The forest is made of ancient Aleppo pines and evergreen oaks. In fact, it is considered one of the finest pine-oak forests in the Middle East. Here, if you are especially lucky, you could glimpse the endemic Persian red squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) which thrives in the forest habitat, or the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena). The grey wolf (Canis lupus) is known to roam in the forest too. Both the Ajlun Nature Reserve and the Dibeen Forest offer visitor information and nearby accommodation.

While a few of the notes are now out-of-date based on subsequent research, this is still the best single book on the Chauvet Cave paintings, done by those who discovered them, did the initial research, and took the initial photographs. It is filled with pictures, similar to a coffee table book, but is much more than that. If you are interested in these earliest paintings -- and I think we all should be since they are near the moment when, through art, we became humans -- this is the right way to get started.

The Chauvet Cave is an amazing find, filled with art more than 30,000 years old. Imagine doing these magnificent drawings with charcoal and raw pigments on a stone wall, and all by firelight. The photographs are beautiful. The cave is closed to the public to protect it, but you can still enjoy feel the wonder through the book. I understand France is working on a replica that will be open to the public, a very good way to share the beauty while protecting the cave.This book, as close as I'm likely to get, is a treasure. It inspires me.
