Review
“The St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary series will be welcomed throughout the world. It promises to have all of Sproul’s hallmarks: clarity and liveliness, humor and pathos, always expressed in application to the mind, will, and affections. Sproul’s ability to focus on the big picture, his genius of never saying too much, leaving his hearers satisfied yet wanting more, never making the Word dull, are all present in these expositions. May they nourish God’s people well and serve as models of the kind of ministry for which we continue to hunger.”—Sinclair B. Ferguson, Professor of Systematic Theology, Redeemer Seminary, Dallas, Texas“Sproul, well-known as a master theologian and extraordinary communicator, now shows that he is a powerful, insightful, helpful expository preacher. This collection of sermons is of great value for churches and Christians everywhere.”—W. Robert Godfrey, President and Professor of Church History, Westminster Seminary California“Sproul is a legend in our time. His preaching has held us in awe for half a century, and these pages represent the fruit of his latest exposition, coming as they do at the very peak of his abilities and insights. I am ecstatic at the prospect of reading the St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary series. It represents Reformed theology on fire, delivered from a pastor’s heart in a vibrant congregation of our time. Essential reading.”—Derek W. H. Thomas, John E. Richards Professor of Systematic and Practical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Minister of Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS“Since stepping into the pulpit of St. Andrew’s and committing himself to the weekly discipline of biblical exposition, this noted preacher has demonstrated a rare ability to explicate and apply God’s Word. I wholeheartedly recommend the St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary series to all who long to know the truth better and experience it more deeply in a life-changing fashion. Here is an indispensable tool for digging deeper into God’s Word. This is a must-read for every Christian.”—Steven J. Lawson, Director of Doctor of Ministry Program and Professor of Preaching, The Master’s Seminary; President and Founder, OnePassion Ministries; author, The Kind of Preaching God Blesses “How exciting! Thousands of us have long been indebted to Sproul the teacher, and now, through the St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary series, we are indebted to Sproul the preacher, whose sermons are thoroughly biblical, soundly doctrinal, warmly practical, and wonderfully readable. This series of volumes is an absolute must for every Reformed preacher and church member who yearns to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ Jesus. Tolle lege, and buy these volumes for your friends.”—Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan"John Wesley once said of a colleague that Scripture so thoroughly pulsed through his spiritual veins that he 'bled Bibline.' The same could be said without exaggeration of R. C. Sproul. More specifically, one could easily say that he 'bleeds Pauline.' The theology of the Apostle to the Gentiles courses through Dr. Sproul's veins in all of his work. Therefore, it is a special privilege to be able to read his sermons on Paul's Letter to the Romans. Romans has turned the world upside down for two millennia. Not only did it lead to Augustine's conversion; it was a primary source for his defense of the gospel against Pelagius. This epistle was the catalyst for the Reformation and shaped the minds and hearts of many leaders of the modern missionary movement. Romans continues its revolution to the present day and each of R. C. Sproul's expositions reminds us why. Read this book and, by God's grace, you'll never be the same."—Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California; author, Core Christianity: Finding Yourself in God's Story

Using this for my Sunday school class. RC Sproul's writings always hit me in a way that few Christian theologians do. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the book of Romans; Justification by Grace, through Faith; or just looking to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of God's love for His people.
As a layperson, this exposition of Romans is a great resource for me. One of the great things about this commentary is that I read it like a book. I would finish a chapter, then I would go on to the next, which I hardly ever do when it comes to commentaries. Now, that's not to say that I didn't re-read certain sections. There were some chapters that were quite technical and deep, e.g., Romans 9. I did re-read that section, which is a good thing. Sproul is a Reformed theologian so this commentary does have a bias, but I wouldn't pass up this great commentary because you have a different viewpoint on soteriology. This commentary can also be used as a devotional book given that each chapter starts with the verses used for the chapter. Even though I've finished the commentary it's going to be a great resource for me in the future. Sproul is a great teacher and this book reflects his gift to teach in an excellent way. Read this book.
RC Sproul writes with depth on probably the most significant letter ever written. His style is very understandable and his logic is sound. He uses a section by section format. Let me explain. He quotes a small section (a paragraph or more) and then comments on the most significant concepts in the section. He explains the meaning and usage of important words. But most importantly he keeps the main theme of Romans central at all times: the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation. Many times I have exclaimed to myself, "I never understood that truth to that degree before". This book is worth reading.
I own what are considered to be the best Technical and Application commentaries on the book of Romans. Don't get me wrong, they are wonderful for what they do.But honestly, this is the commentary I am looking for on the book of Romans. This is why it is done so well: - R.C. Sproul has taken his sermons through the book of Romans and put it into a book. Therefore, this book is filled with deep theological and doctrinal teachings, wonderful encouragements, pressing exhortations and highly desired applications all in one sitting. - You never have to refer back to the verse page of the chapter. He will introduce the passage that he intends to cover in the chapter and as he expounds on the text, he will continue to repeat the text. You will see the verse in bold print with his writings in normal print. - The guy gives you enough Greek to let you know you are getting your money's worth :)In all seriousness, this is the commentary for all peoples. From the theologian and seminarian stuck in the ivory tower to the pastor on the front lines to the Mr & Mrs. Smith leading a discussion series in a small group in Suburbia, USA to even the high school girl for whom the Scriptures simply explode with fire.I have already ordered another copy to send to a friend.
R.C. Sproul's Commentary on Romans is absolutely GREAT. But there is a problem: you will enjoy this book so much that 50% of it will be underlined and full of notes.Yours in Christ,Alex
This is THE commentary I have been waiting for it seems like forever. Most are either superficial, academic, or serve as platforms for their authors to peddle personal preferences and agendas. This commentary is none of those things. RC Sproul has developed an intensely "user-friendly" commentary reflective of his vast knowledge, passion for the truth, and his desire to encourage, exhort, and correct believers. I LOVE this commentary. Currently, I am about a third of the way through. It reads like a wonderful novel that you just do not want to put down. Romans is a foundational text in the New Covenant writings. It is SO rich, so complex, and there is such a need for us to understand the arguments and points the Apostle Paul makes. RC Sproul makes this a wonderful journey of discovery. So many times I have caught myself saying, "So, THAT is what that means" or "NOW I get it!"I cannot wait for the commentary on the Gospel of John that is coming soon. And, I pray that the book of Hebrews will follow shortly. It is my favorite book in the New Testament and I cannot wait to read RC's thoughts. If you have a shelf FULL of commentaries or have none, BUY THIS BOOK. It will encourage you, inspire you, make you think, and make you want to press on to the maturity of your faith and witness.
This is a CLASSIC of Christian Theology, yet understandable to the average reader, teacher or professional ministry worker. Written from a Reformed viewpoint, it is a MUST-READ for serious students of the Word of God.
If you've ever had a basic chemistry course in high school or college, you know that one of the first things you do after becoming familiar with the Periodic Table (akin to learning the order and composition of the Bible) is to learn the properties of the basic and most common elements. The Epistle to the Romans is foundational, elemental to Christian theology, like hydrogen to life (to continue the chemistry metaphor) and as a primer to this foundational New Testament book, Sproul's commentary is invaluable. Not a word is wasted, not a repetition is unhelpful, no jargon gratuitous, all is prerequisite to a deepening understanding of the Gospel.Excellent starting point for the new and the newly mature Christian.
