Review
Professor Liping He from Beijing Normal University has produced a most comprehensive and useful scholarly treatment of world hyperinflation. It is hot off the press. This is a welcomed addition to the literature. Indeed, Hyperinflation: A World History is destined to become a standard reference on the topic.―Prof. Steve Hanke, Johns Hopkins University This is an important contribution to the monetary history literature, one which ought to find its way into all serious university libraries, where it will be borrowed, bought and hopefully read by a wide range of economics students. I hope many will also buy a copy. After all, it will certainly hold its value better than many of the currencies that make an appearance in this book!―Professor Laurence Copeland, Emeritus Professor of Finance, Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University

Do not let “China perspectives†deter you in any way of purchasing this book—In this case, I find it to be a meaningless phrase. Let me emphasize this opinion with this example: What is the American perspective on the solar system? The earth rotates around the sun. What is the European perspective of the solar system? The earth rotates around the sun. What is the Chinese perspective of the solar system? The earth rotates around the sun. There is no difference in perspective between these nationalities. Such is the information in this book--the perspectives are the same for any nationality. This is a great book. Why? It gives the reader a chance to learn from history—A REAL CHANCE to understand hyperinflation, and thereby gives a chance to avoid or mitigate this extremely destructive economic disease. This book gives us the opportunity to learn from past, avoid possible mistakes, and recognize patterns that will lead to hyperinflation, thus enabling countries and governments to come up with possible corrective actions and policies that would do more good than harm for their people. The author provides a good sense of political history for the countries he discusses, which is a comprehensive list of ones that experienced hyperinflation. The numerical evidence to back up what conclusions he makes seems convincing and well researched, and he seems to be very objective in the conclusions he provides. I, having a casual interest in economics, did not get overwhelmed by the numbers—they did not bog me down. I felt for the most part they make their point without me having to stop and ponder them. More academically orientated people would probably stop to study the numbers more carefully. The book is quite readable and interesting even for the casual reader. Two complaints I have about the book. When the discussions are not in chronological order, evidence that is presented can become somewhat clouded. For example, one particular paragraph start out in November, goes to December then suddenly jumps back to February of the same year with no explanation why it jumped back. The author does this with years also—starting in one year, then suddenly giving information from a prior year. Where sometimes it is comprehensible, other times it is not. Transitions between these jumps are generally weak. My second complaint is a general and comprehensive complaint against all the economic books I have read, and that is they never state that to have any chance of a country becoming or maintaining a status of being “richâ€, the country’s exports must exceed the imports. Although the many of the observations and conclusions throughout this book support this fact, the author does not add this in his conclusions. It seems it is taboo in economic, political, and business circles to even mention this fact.Because hyper-inflation has proven to be so destructive to human society, all economists, financial managers, accountants, and especially government officials and leaders should read this book. This book should be mandatory reading for all college degrees. As a suggestion, I really would like to see this book rewritten for a high school class, “Hyperinflation 101†(replacing the “Economics 101†class.) It is that important, and would be much more beneficial to the student-citizens than basic economics. The book could contain less numbers, and more explanations and definitions of economic terms. Adding world maps to this book would enhance it also. The history of countries should remain in tact, and perhaps even expanded.
