The McCabe and Savage stories are not the best mysteries, but I believe they are the best and most entertaining police procedurals. I th o roughly enjoy the discussions between the two, imagining that police officers engage in this type of speculation. I figured out the murderer, but then began to second guess myself because McCabe did. Nice and simple to read.
I really enjoyed this book. I read the whole thing in less than 2 days and I don't usually read quite that fast. Yes, the killer was not a surprise but I didn't think that took anything away from the book. It was still interesting to see how they figured it all out. A great addition to the series in my opinion. I can't wait for the next one.
McCabe/Savage #5 is my favorite of this page-turner series. I commented after the last book that this author may not be the type to lay subtle clues to help the reader figure out the mystery which I enjoy from other authors. While he continues to 'lead' you to the ending, I was quite engaged with the book from start to finish and he did notch-up on the whodunit for this book. The plot was good, the characters were very good, and the writing was excellent.McCabe and Savage are one of my favorite duos. I enjoy the Portland Maine setting of the book which includes the typical chilly weather which gives the book an added feel of being there. There are strong parallels to my favorite author, Brian Freeman, and his Stride series: the detective duo, Portland and Duluth are comparable locales for water and weather, and the author's flowing words on these page turning novels.I would like to see the author try to end each and every chapter with some type of suspense that entices the reader to the start the next one immediately. Sometimes I finish one and think 'ok...that's it?'.This series is one of my favorites to read especially to supplement my #1 author for a like-read in between his releases.
When a woman commits suicide by jumping off a bridge into icy waters, it starts a chain of events resulting in several murders. Hannah was gang-raped in college twelve years before and never received justice. But someone decides to seek it for her.McCabe and Savage are detectives in Portland, Maine where one of the cases of revenge takes place. I especially enjoyed this as I live in that city and recognized many locations mentioned in the book. This is well-written and a good thriller. I knew pretty much who the real killer was about halfway through the book, but there were enough twists that kept me engaged right to the end. I haven't read anything by this author before, but I will definitely be reading more.
I'm a non-fiction kinda guy. History, biography, politics (Oy), but every couple of books I just need a tightly written murder mystery. Hayman's my man. Two great characters without super powers (other than a eidetic memory) you can get to know without having to read their stories in any particular order. Almost believable plots with enough gore to satisfy that particular need without taking me to a slaughterhouse. Believable levels of depravity. He's got the good stuff.
Enjoyed the book . However, I knew who the killer was near the middle of the book. Didn't take away from the story. Loved the ending and the relationship between McCabe and Savage. Give me more!
McCabe and Savage don't disappoint as far as characters go, but the storyline was a little blah. I think it would have been a better book if it had covered more of Hannah's story, but then it wouldn't have been the "quick and easy" read that Hartley seems to excel with. I enjoy the interpersonal relationship of McCabe and savage.
James Hayman is a master of police procedurals and character interactions. A suicide, a probable suicide and a missing banker lead McCabe and Savage on a fine chase. Figuring it all out makes for a solid read and a bit of the ending is a fine surprise. Be aware the subject of rape plays a pivotal role and is tough to read.
