I am using this now for my MBA healthcare coursework- this book is actually really good and I am somewhat regretting renting it since it would be valuable to keep. Great real world examples and very applicable to the healthcare field.

Very interesting book, lots of terms easily simplified for better understanding. Great scenarios used to help understand.

The content of the book is here but this version only allows LOC to track reading progress and doesn't allow for page numbers to be viewed. This was very unhelpful for me who had assigned reading pages and couldn't find the desired reading sections.

BackgroundI recently decided to learn Mandarin but I work full-time and my schedule isn't flexible enough where I would be able to take night courses, so I set out to teach myself (with the help of my girlfriend, a native speaker). I looked up several books on Amazon and cross referenced them to local universities to see which were "tried and true" for college level learning. The Integrated Chinese series appeared to be widely used so I purchased the level 1 part 1 textbook and workbook.Book StructureThere are 10 chapters and each chapter is broken down into two sub-chapters that are identical in structure. Each sub-chapter begins with a dialogue that introduces that new words and grammar rules. Next you are presented with a vocabulary list of new words which generally will consist of 10-20 new words. After the vocab list comes the new grammar rules followed by practice exercises. Each chapter has a theme such as hobbies, traveling, family, etc.OpinionThe textbook is easy to follow and the grammar rules are explained in plain English. Level 1 Part 1 is what I would expect from 1 semester of college level language studies. If you're teaching yourself, you'll need someone to help you with your pronunciation. They offer language CDs separately so you can listen to the dialogues, but I didn't bother purchasing them so I'm unable to comment on them. I did purchase the workbook but haven't used it at all because the practice sections in the textbook have been sufficient. Overall I would recommend this book to someone who is motivated to learn Mandarin and at a pace comparable to a college level course.

This textbook is an excellent resource that makes learning Chinese so much easier! The pace is just right: not too slow or too fast, and vocabulary and grammar points are delivered in very digestible chunks. The dialogues are level-appropriate, and both pinyin and English translations of the characters are provided separately, so you can refer to them if you need to but they do not distract you if you want to challenge yourself to read just the characters. Grammar points are explained very clearly. This book would easily suit both people studying on their own and people learning in a classroom environment. Everything is clear enough that no further explanation is needed, just some exposure to Chinese pronunciation - which is abundant on the web for free. The Simplified and Traditional Character Workbook is an excellent companion book for practicing writing the characters you learn in the textbook. There is also a Simplified Character Workbook that is not character writing practice but different kinds of exercises for pinyin and characters. The latter I think would be less useful for the independent learner, but it's still a good resource. These books take all of the "intimidation" factor OUT of learning Chinese!

Absolutely fantastic series of books! The first two years of my Chinese classes in college used the Integrated Chinese series as the main curriculum material. The entire series incorporates vocabulary and grammar points that are relevant to the beginner/intermediate student. Rather than simply listing out dozens of vocab words, each chapter is prefaced with a dialogue or short commentary that uses the following vocab words. Teaching relevant words is one thing, but giving them in a relevant context was incredibly helpful. In addition, the dialogues and commentaries were not random stories - the Integrated Chinese series follows the lives of a handful of characters as they walk through life together, recording their conversations and experiences. It very much resembles Friends the way that the characters interact with one another, fall in love, go to school, express struggles, etc. For our class, we wanted to plow through each chapter for the sake of getting to the next drama-filled episode of Li You and Wang Peng's love story.The accompanying videos were the icing on the cake, as (very clearly) white actors were used with terrible dubs to tell the thrilling storyline of how Gao Wenzhong tries to intervene in the aforementioned love story. People have Bachelor parties and Gossip Girl get-togethers, but each day of class for us became an Integrated Chinese viewing party.All joking aside, the approach this series takes to teaching language (much less a language which is often deemed "too difficult" for native English speakers) is simple and natural and caters well to the cultural environments that college age students encounter. Each chapter concludes with a handful of vocab/grammar practices, and the workbooks (purchased separately) really helped to drive these points home for me. They also introduced new points that could be extrapolated from the main text. We tore the workbook sheets out each week when we turned them in as homework. Using these books four semesters in a row prepared me well for third year Chinese and I still have/read through all of these books. Thank you Integrated Chinese!

Generally these books are required for classes. Yes, it has lots of vocabulary and the grammar is helpful. However, if you're a teacher reading this review, please consider using another book to teach by. Integrated Chinese began to get sloppy with the illustrations in the book and the content jumps around. At the level most students are when learning material of this type, I would think that the dialogue between the characters would have a little more substance and not seem so random. In fact, some of the translations of the words in English many students are unfamiliar with because they are outdated.

Brian Magee provides an admiral introduction to the major trends and personages in the history of that which we are pleased to call western philosophy. The book brings together text and artwork to present philosophical ideas and philosophers in an approachable manner. The book is a wonderful introduction that keeps the reader interested through lively text and captivating illustrations.The text is highly readable and the prints are very enjoyable if you happen to have a magnifying glass. The book would render much better as a large format style book. As it is, a magnifying glass is necessary and some of the artwork is photo reduced to fit the dimensions of this book to such an exaggerated extent that it detracts from the force and effectiveness of the original artwork.

This is a very readable although fairly short illustrated history of philosophy, by an extremely knowledgeable author. This s great book to read if you just want an overview of the history of philosophy as well as brief explanations of most of the schools of thought. Magee has written many works on philosophy and has created a couple of BBC series on philosophy. His writing style is very clear and he makes extremely interesting points about the different philosophers and about philosophy in general. There are many digressions and sidebars throughout the book that consider various philosphical points in a very brief manner (for example, "Can the existence of God be proved?", "The power of ideas", and "The Einsteinian revolution"). The book itself - like most Dorling-Kindersley (DK) books I've seen - is extremely well done, a beautiful book that invites browsing.

This is an excellent, simple history of philosophy for people (like me) who have little knowledge of the subject and want a clear, easy to remember overview. The format is forty or so chapters, usually four to eight pages long apiece, with interesting illustrations and sidebars, devoted to each important philosopher or philosophic movement from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century.I have read other books that cover the same ground as this one, but they weren't as clear and were perhaps too technical and detailed for a non-philosopher like me. At any rate, I never retained much of what I read on philosophy until I found this book.

The Story of Philosophy is a facinating and highly informative introduction to the history of western philosophy.It is a book that would be fun to read either from start to finish or just skipping around. It is written in a waythat is understandable to readers new to the subject, while not being dumbed down. The book is visually appealing with manyphotographs and illustrations, along with sidebars on nearly every page introducing the reader to subjects relating to the main text. My only complaint is that I think the title should be "The Story of Western Philosophy", because it only lightly covers eastern and arabic philosophy, which is rather odd considering that my copy promonently features the Buddha on the cover. However, it does provide a helpful "For further reading" section that includes works on those subjects. Altogether, this is an excellent book that I am glad to add to my library. I also recommend as a good companion to this book DK's "World Religions" by John Bowker.

A really excellent read, although the type is very small

At first sight, this book may appear as a colorful, photo-packed elementary book on philosophy but it is much more. Bryan Magee elegantly and, most important, fairly presents the philosophers, their beliefs, their influence, and the 'eternal' questions they left us.Above the excellent summarization and presentation, the great feature of the book is he clearly traces the development of ideas through generations of philosophers. Even for someone like me, who has taken philosophy courses at University level, this book is a great way to get a quick overview. The pictures and side boxes also add the historical context to the formation of the philosophers' ideas.

Bryan Magee's broad overview is a perfect introduction to the wide wonderful world of Philosophy. It's a great reference tool. This DK book is, like all the rest, beautiful, richly illustrated, and incredibly useful.

If you are looking for an introduction to Chanel and her world, begin here. It is a pictorial biography with about 2/3 text and 1/3 images highlighting the narration. It is great to read about a person or place in Chanel's life and then look to the photo above and see what the author is describing. You feel as if you are going back in time. Edmonde Charles-Roux was a friend of Chanel and editor of French VOGUE. This is a sympathetic portrayal.It is as much about the people and places which surrounded Chanel as Chanel herself. There isn't much coverage of Chanel's activities during WWII or directly afterward. The emphasis is more on the positive and creative parts of Chanel's life. I found the years when Chanel first set up business through the 1930's the most fascinating. It is a fairly quick read. Loved the abundant images on every page. You visually immerse yourself in her world. There are wonderful quotes of Chanel's sprinkled throughout.

An excellent history of our wonderful Chanel. She was God's gift to women because she took away corsets and hems that dragged on the ground. This book was recommended by The New York Times - the photos alone are worth buying it for.

I was looking for a book showing photos of Chanel's clothing designs and styles. This book focuses more on her life and the celebrities and cultural/social trends of her era (spanning 1910's - 1950's), so if you are looking to see her clothing styles and designs, you will be disappointed as there isn't that much coverage of the actual clothing. However, it is a very absorbing, encyclopedic, pictorial collection of the people of Chanel's time and you can spend many a lazy Sunday afternoon thoroughly exploring les temps perdus. There are many many pictures of Coco Chanel - like Madonna, she looks different every few years, a real chameleon. It retails at $65, so the $37 Amazon price is a good deal. It is a heavy thick book with glossy pages.

As a mother of 2 very young children I do not find much time to read; however, I found myself barely able to put this book down. Every spare second I had I spent reading it until I finished the book. I am definitely looking forward to the movie that will be coming out soon.

This is one of those books that you keep reading despite the fact that you've realized many times that it is thoroughly unenjoyable. You keep telling yourself to stop it and find that you've swiped yet another page on your Kindle. There are NO, repeat NO, likable or sympathetic characters. This is a sad group of dysfunctional, alcoholic, abusive, self centered, narcissistic, weak willed people. And Oh yes, some of them turn out to be murderers. Not everything that I read, needs to be a feel good novel but in reflection, this book had no redeeming value whatsoever and left me feeling depressed and annoyed that I hung in there until the end. I would have given it fewer stars but felt that, in fairness, I did keep going until the bitter end and that probably justified my 3 star rating. I do not recommend this book.

I finally succumbed and bought this book to see what all the hoopla was about and, no, I haven’t seen the movie. I found it to be a super entertaining read. I finished it in the ‘wee smalls,’ unable to put it down. What I really liked about it was that though I thought I’d figured out who the evil doer was at the very beginning, the author kept leading me astray … so that I abandoned my first impression only to be surprised at the end when I found that I was right from the start!The story is told from alternating points of view which I liked, too.The novel is dark and fast-paced, the characters are complex and the plot is compelling. Highly recommended for thriller fans. Five big, bright, shiny stars

In a word: crap.I took this book with me on a beach vacation because I wanted something to breeze through, something to entertain me. I do not ask for much in my beach reads: plot, some coherent writing, character development. I gave this book more than a fair shot. But I'm stopping at page 175.Poor writing, flat characters, and the author's sexist tone seeps off every page. Every female psychosis is on display here: dressing the part, feeling worthless, feeling like a child, sexual motivation behind how men act, women's revenge, "I'm a force to be reckoned with," "all these men," the list goes on....I can't take it anymore. Life is too short to read bad books like this one.I hate it1/5 Goodreads1/5 Amazon

Hard to believe anyone likes this book. I struggled to finish it although the ending wasn't very well camouflaged. There was not a single character in the book that a reader could like. They all seemed to have deep psychological problems which came together to result in the murder that is the central theme. I would like to say something good about this book but for the life of me I can't think of a single thing. The book is presented from the point of view of the three lead female characters so it switches from one to the other. This didn't produce significant continuity for the plot and as the book droned on more life details were added which makes you wonder how anyone so damaged could survive in the world. Save your money and read a synopsis on line.

A gripping page-turner, but not until about 2/3 into the book, which maybe is par for thrillers. I almost didn't bother finishing at about halfway, when I read the one-star poor reviews here. I identified with their complaints: unlikeable, neurotic characters; but NOT with their disappointment of the story's resolution. I found it very satisfying and gripping to the very last page. Hawkins writes prose very well, capturing the mood of the trains and London boroughs, writes almost poetically about the weather and countryside, but the inner dialogue of the women characters is a bit excessive. The characters seem soulless with not a drop of the milk of human kindness (classic thrillers don't feature high-minded characters either, but at least they have some sardonic flair, bumbling endearment, or harmless quirks, which this book lacks). It also would have helped if more overt physical features of the characters were delineated - just to form a picture in the reader's mind of who was speaking in the next narrative, because they all seemed to have the same weary, jaded, cynical personalities, speaking the same dialect, being self-centered. The men characters seem also clones of each other, almost as sex objects in a reverse sexism. Still, on into the story, you really want to find out what really happened: the core of the mystery, and what will happen. I give it a high rating because: 1. It evolved into a fascinating story, and; 2. I was left with a thought-provoking look into my own life: my experiences and relationships and identifying with that feminine conundrum of believing what a man says but desperately trying to prove him wrong, and when proving him wrong, feels her confidence erode and her self-loathing sprout as he unabashedly attempts to justify himself, either with the truth or more lies.

This book was a lot BIGGER than I expected. It's truly a coffee table book size-wise. Beautiful photos and lots of info. I would recommend this to the true NASCAR fan. From Europe: GOD BLESS AMERICA

This book is at an adult reading level, and it is freaking HUGE. I don't know the measurements, but it's the size of a textbook in every way. It is like 650 pages, and the text is normal sized.It's more than worth the money, and I'm absolutely thrilled. Just be aware that you're getting a textbook on NASCAR xD

Book was damaged during delivery I assume. The “label” on the front stating “NASCAR” is made out of plastic and it popped off while being delivered. Removed from box and the label was at the bottom of the box. I was disappointed since this was a Christmas gift for my father.

This was a great gift for the NASCAR enthusiast in our family. It is substantial with loads of information.It is a beautiful book, too. The recepiant was so pleased!

great book love the characters and I couldn't put it down such a great love story I love the series

I am unsure on how to rate this book. I am emotionally drained from reading it. I was so invested in the characters and the story line and the hits kept on coming. I am trying to be objective considering the fact that it is the 4th in a 5 book series so I knew there would be no satisfaction at the end.This book spans over a 3 week period in their relationship so it can't be resolved. If you understand the process of healing from sexual abuse you will get what she was getting at. She needed to develop that side of Gideon POV and that process is emotional and difficult to get through. Having said that, the Brett Kline thing was disappointing and I wish it would have been left out.If you are invested in this series , you will enjoy this book but please be prepared for the roller coaster ride and understand that is purely character development and no significant advances in the storyline.So in a direct appeal to Silvia Day. If you are at all reading your reviews. Thank you for showing the male perspective of a sexual abuse survivor and the consequences if you have not dealt with it. But please ........... for book # 5 let them both find their strength and claim their life. Finish their story line where it was worth for us to invest 3 years into this series. Skip the cookie cutter way out and span it over a few years not just weeks. If there ever was an extensive Happy Ending needed it would be in this series. Considering the time investment of the readers. I sincerely hope to see "One with you"published within a few months. Not years!!

2.5 stars. I started reading this book in the hopes that the story would redeem itself from the third installment but sadly, while it may have been better than the third, it was no where close to being as strongly written as the first two installments. I felt there was too much and yet not enough; too much unnecessary drama, too much unjustifiable internal and external conflicts and dare I say, too much gratuitous sex that felt more filler than story forwarding. To me, it felt like this book was another bridge to the conclusion but a bridge that never needed to be crossed, like when your GPS leads you way off course.The book itself was written well but the story wasn't tight at all. There were too many subplots going on and I could see what the author was trying to do and how these side plots were supposed to play into the overall story arc to get to the point of the climax but they all felt rather contrived and more like filler.As for Gideon. Well, I liked that we got his point of view but I'm still waffling over my feelings over his head space. While he was completely aware of Eva's issues with certain things, he acted like he was completely justified in railroading over them himself. Yet, I suppose that was to be expected to a certain extent. If a man goes as far as to kill someone for someone they love, there really isn't much they can be expected not to do. But over all, I felt the more Eva was making an effort to put herself together, the more Gideon unraveled. And what is it with the women in his life? Are they all mentally unhinged? The only normal female he seems to know is his sister.Overall, it wasn't a bad read but it was just disappointing. The story felt scattered, unfocused and many things unjustified. Rising tension came in spits and spurts and at points instead of biting my nails with anticipation, I felt myself asking "oh for crying out loud, what now?" with an eye roll. I was pleased with where it ended but I struggled most with how it got there. It feels like this book and the previous one were ways to make more money and bilk the fans and I don't like that feeling. I will likely buy the next (and hopefully last) installment and I can only hope the wait this time around won't be as long.

I was thinking about how I felt about this book and it hit me when I realized that I was able to put it down and go to bed. If I'm reading a great book I will stay up way too late and don't want to put it down. Have to know what's going to happen next. I, unfortunately, didn't feel that way on this one. I reached 70% and started wondering if anything was going to happen ever?!!! I was aware there is going to be another book in this series, so I knew it wasn't going to wrap everything all up. But instead of solving some of the problems and then adding new ones....the same old problems were there (some just not talked about but never resolved) and then more conflicts were added to the pile. I never felt this book had a clear cut focus. I also really struggled with the big issues at the end. It seemed minor to me and something that could have been talked through, rather than the way Eva handled it. Something different in this book vs the first three is that we finally got to hear Gideon's point of view. I liked hearing that but struggled a few times when some of his "thoughts" were describing Eva's outfit or even other character's. I don't feel like Ms Day had a real grasp on how to "speak" male.I really hope the next (final?) book has more action and definitely conclusions. At this point I'm not exactly sure if I would read more. I had to go back and re-read the first three in this series since it had been over a year since I read them. If it's going to be another year, I'm not sure I will be interested. Right now I'm feeling like I could take it or leave it.
