I am giving this book five stars, because it managed to make a subject that I dreaded to study actually interesting. It did have the usual dry and dull explanations of law, but it included actual cases interspersed between the dull explanations to show how the law is actually applied. It is also impressively up to date in the cases and examples it uses (especially cases involving the internet which is fairly new in our common law history). It was the cases and their proceedings that really helped me while learning about how different laws are actually interpreted. This was a great textbook in terms of a brief overview of law for those who are new to the subject.

I've never rated a textbook on content but I have to say, this made business law a much easier read than I was expecting. The booked is filled with examples and cases that really help grasp some unfamiliar terms and ideas. I had no legal background and got the book as a class requirement, and was very pleasantly surprised.

This is a great book. I would give it 3 1/2 stars but it won't let me. A lot of people have said that it makes the concept very easy to explain, we'll for me it hasn't. It takes me a few reads to get what their talking about. But overall it's a great book how they show you sample cases, how to read a case and file it correctly. It's better than any other legal book I've read. Some chapters are boring as hell but some of them are super interesting and fun to read. I rented this book but I think I'll just buy it. Since I know I will need it in the future for reference.

Required for an MBA class. Worked well for what it is. Provides a layman's understanding of key legal concepts that impact business. Although written primarily from a United States point of view it does touch on some International legal concepts and key foundational elements of British and Roman law that underscore or contrast with US law.

Best book I was forced to buy for school ever. It's well written and a lot to learn from. I read chapters that weren't even required. I used this book to open a series LLC and rewritten a few contracts. Good stuff!

This book is very informative and outlines all the latest legalities of business law. Additionally, it gives several real life cases in each chapter to provide examples of the course material. Used for MBA Legal Environment of Business class which was perfect.

To whom it might concern, I received the book on time to used it my class. Unfortunately, the book came some what damage. I couldn’t send it back because I need the book on a weekly basis. Other than that the book is very useful, without the book I couldn’t have done my homework and study for test.Sincerely,Lidia

Parallel Worlds: A Journey Through Creation, Higher Dimensions, and the Future of the Cosmos, by Michio Kaku

Review

“In Parallel Worlds, Michio Kaku brings his formidable explanatory talents to bear on one of the strangest and most exciting possibilities to have emerged from modern physics: that our universe may be but one among many, perhaps infinitely many, arrayed in a vast cosmic network. With deft use of analogy and humor, Kaku patiently introduces the reader to variations on this theme of parallel universes, coming from quantum mechanics, cosmology, and most recently, M-theory. Read this book for a wonderful tour, with an expert guide, of a cosmos whose comprehension forces us to stretch to the very limits of imagination.” —Brian Greene, Professor of Theoretical Particle Physics, Columbia University, and author of The Fabric of the Cosmos and The Elegant Universe “Kaku employs an amiable style that does much to make the story accessible even for those of us who have trouble telling the difference between superstring theory and Silly String aerosol. . . . Fascinating and sometimes downright boggling.” –Sci Fi Magazine “Kaku covers a tremendous amount of material . . . in a clear and lively way.” –Los Angeles Times Book Review“One hundred years ago, Albert Einstein revolutionized the science of cosmology. In Parallel Worlds, Michio Kaku, another genius, updates us on the this science and speculates about the future of the universe.” –San Antonio Express-News“Those who might enjoy a tour of cosmology, time travel, string theory, and the universe in 10 or 11 dimensions will find no better guide than Michio Kaku, a rare individual who has undertaken research in these subject areas yet also knows well how to present this intriguing, complex material in an engaging and easily assimilable style.” —Donald Goldsmith, author of The Runaway Universe and Connecting with the Cosmos “A highly readable and exhilarating romp through the frontiers of cosmology.” —Martin Rees, author of Our Cosmic Habitat and Our Final Century “A roller-coaster ride through the universe—and beyond—by one of the world’s finest science writers. Michio Kaku shows that the surface familiarity of the physical world conceals a wonderland of weird entities—dark matter and energy, hidden dimensions of space, and tiny loops of vibrating string that hold the cosmos together. In the universe according to Kaku, reality is as mind-bending as the most exhilarating science fiction.” —Paul Davies, Australian Centre for Astrobiology, Macquarie University, Sydney, and author of How to Build a Time Machine“Michio Kaku has done it again. In Parallel Worlds, he deftly transforms the frontier of physics into a kind of amusement park, where you actually have fun while reading about Einstein's relativity, quantum mechanics, cosmology, and string theory. But the real story here is how Kaku invokes these powerful tools to speculate about multiple universes and their philosophical implications for our perceptions of God and the meaning of life.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and Director of the Hayden Planetarium, New York City, and author of Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution

From the Inside Flap

Is our universe dying? Could there be other universes? In "Parallel Worlds," world-renowned physicist and bestselling author Michio Kaku"--an" author who "has a knack for bringing the most ethereal ideas down to earth" "(Wall Street Journal)--takes readers on a fascinating tour of cosmology, M-theory, and its implications for the fate of the universe. In his first book of physics since "Hyperspace, Michio Kaku begins by describing the extraordinary advances that have transformed cosmology over the last century, and particularly over the last decade, forcing scientists around the world to rethink our understanding of the birth of the universe, and its ultimate fate. In Dr. Kaku's eyes, we are living in a golden age of physics, as new discoveries from the WMAP and COBE satellites and the Hubble space telescope have given us unprecedented pictures of our universe in its infancy. As astronomers wade through the avalanche of data from the WMAP satellite, a new cosmological picture is emerging. So far, the leading theory about the birth of the universe is the "inflationary universe theory," a major refinement on the big bang theory. In this theory, our universe may be but one in a multiverse, floating like a bubble in an infinite sea of bubble universes, with new universes being created all the time. A parallel universe may well hover a mere millimeter from our own. The very idea of parallel universes and the string theory that can explain their existence was once viewed with suspicion by scientists, seen as the province of mystics, charlatans, and cranks. But today, physicists overwhelmingly support string-theory, and its latest iteration, M-theory, as it is this onetheory that, if proven correct, would reconcile the four forces of the universe simply and elegantly, and answer the question "What happened before the big bang?" Already, Kaku explains, the world's foremost physicists and astronomers are searching for ways to test the theory of the multiverse using highly sophisticated wave detectors, gravity lenses, satellites, and telescopes. The implications of M-theory are fascinating and endless. If parallel worlds do exist, Kaku speculates, in time, perhaps a trillion years or more from now, as appears likely, when our universe grows cold and dark in what scientists describe as a big freeze, advanced civilizations may well find a way to escape our universe in a kind of "inter-dimensional lifeboat." An unforgettable journey into black holes and time machines, alternate universes, and multidimensional space, "Parallel Worlds gives us a compelling portrait of the revolution sweeping the world of cosmology.

Since I am a layperson and a non-scientist, this book took me several weeks to read. It was well worth the time. Professor Kaku addresses issues in cosmology thoroughly but with great clarity. Each chapter drew me further into pondering the origins of the universe, the possible existence of parallel universes, and the issues raised by these reflections about the future of humanity. As a Christian, I especially appreciated his reflections about the meaning of life and his unbiased and inclusive thoughts about the relevance of religion to cosmology. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite books. I'm hardly the science-type, but I've gotten sucked into Physics (study of matter) as a kind of hobby. Michio Kaku takes his readers on an entertaining yet enlightening tour of string theory. This is the theory that the smallest material particle in the universe is not a point in space but a string, and how that string vibrates determines the element. Changing the vibration results in a different element. Dr Kaku is not afraid of heretical questions, asking "If the universe is a symphony of strings, then is there a Composer?" In his chapter "A Designer Universe?" he acknowledges the evidence for a Creator and explains his disinclination to believe. Likely Dr Kaku doesn't know or doesn't care that the Bible includes stories of, and references to, and promises of parallel worlds.Dr Kaku has self-promoting tendencies, as his critics rightly claim. But his desire to gain an audience enriches his explanatory skills. He has mastered the ability to present scientific theory in a manner unscientific audiences can understand, yet without talking down to us. This is a skill other Physics authors--Lisa Randall "Warped Passages", Heinerich Pas "The Perfect Wave"--never quite master. (Both books well worth reading.) If you're a Physics hobbyist like myself, or simply enjoy thinking in new ways, "Parallel Worlds" is a great launch pad into current thinking about reality. ~Star Readers: from out of the east

An incredible amount of information packed into this small book. I read bits and pieces at will based on my interests, for example scientific views on free will and determinism. It is written in laymen's language and one doesn't need to be a scientist to understand. Michio Kaku's views about future reality come from quantum theory micro world, and seem very surreal and bizarre . Very interesting.

This book was a fun trip. The beginning and ending are a little mathematics heavy, but Ivery much enjoyed the mind boggling concepts. It's definitely one you couldread several times. I had a lot of fun thought provoking conversations thanks tothis book.

A great journey into the parallel universes as predicted by the M-string physics theory. Are we alone?, Do we have parallel realities? What creates our choice?, Do all things exists independent of our observation?. Although it is a pop-science book, not extrictly a philosophy book, it brings several trascendental questions to our minds: What is the purpose of the universe?. As all Kaku's books, very pleasant to read it.

Michio Kaku is one of the most significant theoretical physicists of our day, and this is his signature work. Besides providing a basic history of astrophysics knowledge and concepts, Dr. Kaku discusses the possibility of parallel universes, multiple dimensions, and even time travel. Our universe may in fact be an offshoot of another universe, possibly from a (theoretical) white hole. Once regarded as science fiction, many of the concepts Dr. Kaku discusses in this book are increasingly becoming accepted by scientists as plausible facts. Most of this book will be easily understandable for the average lay person. However, much of the book is spent on string theory. If you don't have at least some education in college level physics, some of this may be difficult to understand (not to mention a little dry). That said, Dr. Kaku does a better job than most in explaining in. All in all, this is an important book explaining some of the most cutting edge theories and concepts in modern physics. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in astronomy or astrophysics.

The book covers a huge amount of material in very little detail; a topic gets a page or two, then it's off to the next topic. I found some great one sentence summaries that pulled ideas from other books together for me, but there was little detail leading up to the sentence, and no detail leading on from there. I wanted to learn about string theory, but I found thousands of sorta related facts and claims about the universe that got wearying after 100 pages.

If you're interested in quantum theory, and multiple worlds ideas, this is a pretty informative and interesting read. Michio Kaku is clever and engaging to read, but I will admit that this book took me some long periods of 'picking up and putting down' to get through. The material is not simple, but it is presented in relateable ways for the most part. Good stuff.

Review

"A fond and wise little book... I jettison advice books after I’ve flipped through them. This one I will keep." --Dwight Garner, The New York Times"A slim yet sage volume... While Japanese item-control diva Marie Kondo gave us strict instructions to only keep things that spark joy, Magnusson’s book is straightforward and unsentimental (with a bit of humor). The main message from this mother of five is: Take responsibility for your items and don’t leave them as a burden for family and friends." --The Washington Post "Proustian... A primer on how to winnow your belongings before you die, so you don’t burden your family... Ms. Magnusson is the anti-Kondo, who takes us on a charming and discursive tour of her own stuff." --Penelope Green, The New York Times“Magnusson shares solid guiding principles for organizing your home, no matter your age or life circumstance.” —Business Insider"One of the most charming, funny, and motivating books I've read in some time... Magnusson is an absolute delight. This book is so much more than lifestyle tips. It's full of life. Magnusson's candid humor and unassailable spirit comes through on each page... The best way to prepare for death is to live a good life, which Magnusson has done. We're lucky that she shares so much of it — in stories of gratitude, family, work, and love." -Buzzfeed“Sure, it sounds morbid, but it's actually a pretty smart idea. Death cleaning isn't about getting rid of all your stuff, but rather streamlining your life so you're only holding onto what makes you happy . . . it's about so much more than dusting and sorting.” —Elle Decor“It’s a very short book and when I first picked it up, I thought it could easily have been edited down to a magazine article, or even a tweet…But her writing grew on me. If it were boiled down, I would miss her voice…Reading her book is much like having a sensible, cheerful aunt sit you down to tell you hard truths that your mother is too nice to say.” --Laurie Hertzel, Minneapolis Star Tribune“Keep only what you love and what makes you happy in the moment. It’s like Marie Kondo, but with an added sense of the transience and futility of this mortal existence.” —The New York Post"Witty, useful and oddly profound." --Entertainment Weekly"Has benefits you can enjoy while you’re still very much alive... could be a good way for families to discuss sensitive issues that might otherwise be hard to bring up." --TIME

Over the past few years I’ve been lecturing to the genealogy community on the topic of what to do with years of family history research and how to pass it on to the next generation. In my own book After You’re Gone: Future Proofing Your Genealogy Research, I review many simple techniques for cleaning out a loved one’s home in order to gather important family history items. So when it was announced that The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margaret Magnusson was being released, the book went to the top of my “must read” list. And I wasn’t disappointed. So what makes Magnusson’s slim but effective tome different than any one of the other “get organized” books out there? Hers is done with humor and humility and from the perspective that one day each of us will be gone from this earth. And who wants to be remember by their family and friends as a packrat? Or as someone who lived in a house where the camera crew from Hoarders was just outside the window? As the author states in the foreward: “Let me help make your loved ones’ memories of you nice—instead of awful.”What is Death Cleaning? The Swedish term döstädning literally means “death cleaning” in English. And as the author states, “it is a term that means that you remove unnecessary things and make your home nice and orderly when you think the time is coming closer for you to leave the planet.”Simple, right? Actually not as simple as you think. I’ve gone through two major “clean outs” of homes in the past 10 years, and I can tell you that each situation is different and each clean out takes lots of time. Magnusson cuts through the sentimentality that can often bog us down when we set out to do a “purge” of possessions. The author bluntly reminds you that if you are sitting on items that you haven’t looked at in years, would you really miss them? And what is the real value of these items? And more importantly, what legacy are you leaving for your children or grandchildren?Death cleaning according to Magnusson is “about a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly.” So this isn’t just for those of us in our twilight years . . . anyone who feels burdened by their possessions can benefit from the sage advice found in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning.Practice Advice Delivered with HumorMagnusson is “somewhere between 80 and 100 years old” as she states in the About the Author section and much of her advice is based on real experience. She cleaned out her mother’s apartment as well as her mother-in-law’s apartment after their deaths. And she downsized her own large home to fit into a two-bedroom apartment when her own husband died. One touching segment, for me, was when the author discussed finding notes from her mother pinned to specific items. Each note contained advice as to how to dispose of the item and who to contact since they might be interested. This practice provided peace of mind to Magnusson as she sorted through her mother’s possessions. And the funniest segments dealt with finding what the author calls “vice” items such as a block of arsenic (which her father kept on hand during World War II when the Nazis took over much of Europe) or cartons of cigarettes in her grandmother’s linen cabinet where she would sneak a smoke. Magnusson advises that if you have items tucked away that would cause embarrassment or discomfort when found by your loved ones, dispose of them. Or, in the case of a loved one’s collection of “marriage counselors”” keep your favorite one, not all fifteen. Not All Advice Works for Genealogists and Family HistoriansWhile I agree with the author on her basic approach to handling family photos and other sentimental items – set them aside to review later and don’t get bogged down in a walk down memory lane or you’ll never accomplish the cleaning – I strongly disagree with some ways of handling these items.Throwing away duplicate photos or images that are out of focus etc. is great, I don’t agree in disposing of photos just because you can’t identify anyone in the picture. As genealogists we know that we have resources to help figure out who is who and when the image was taken even if there are no notes written on the back.In addition, when it comes to salacious stories, letters and diaries, she writes: “Perhaps you have saved letters, documents, or diaries that contain information or family stories you would never wish to embarrass your descendants with. While we seem to live in a culture where everyone thinks they have the right to every secret, I do not agree. If you think the secret will cause your loved ones harm or unhappiness, then make sure to destroy them. Make a bonfire or shove them into the hungry shredder.”Again, I have to disagree. As a family historian my role is to uncover the truth, and then to preserve the truth. There are better ways of handling this type of information: one method I use is to preserve the information, place it into an envelope with instructions on how to handle it (such as release after all living individuals identified in the story have passed), and then store the item with estate planning and other important papers. This way my executor can decide how to handle the items, but they aren’t burned on the trash heap. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning – A Great GiftThere are several books that I occasionally send to friends and family members, and even colleagues, as a thank you or when they are going through a difficult time in life. If you have parents who should be downsizing, or know a friend who just lost their spouse and needs to go through possessions, the calming advice in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning can help remove the sting from such a process. I’m adding this one to my list of my “gifting” books.ConclusionOne of the most important pieces of advice from Magnusson, besides performing your own death cleaning NOW, is to discuss the topic with your family members and friends. She notes the Viking tradition of burying objects with the owner when they died: “This was to be sure that the dead would not miss anything in their new environment. It was also an assurance for the family members who remained that they would not become obsessed with spirits of the dead and constantly be reminded of them because their possessions were still scattered all over the tent or mud hut.”I enjoyed reading The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margaret Magnusson and I intend to put much of the information to good use in 2018 as I downsize my home here in Chicago. One of the main themes in Magnusson’s work is one of generosity: giving away those possessions that have outlived their usefulness in your life and gift them to someone else in need of their functionality. Doing so reminds me of the motto on Peter Bailey’s office wall in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life: “All you can take with you is that which you’ve given away.”

This is an exceedingly well-written book about a deeply personal and fraught moment in life. I think everyone SHOULD read it, but it requires careful examination of your headspace before you do so.A lot of people are complaining about how it doesn't tell you HOW to clean. That's not its aim. What it does it show you how to get into the correct headspace to DO the things YOU should be doing without selfishly expecting other people to clean up after you when you have died.Read it with care and embrace what it tells you. You will be happier in the long run.

I highly reccommend this- all my friends and family in the British Virgin Islands had a 'life cleanse' a few months ago and I can't tell you how much it put things in perspective. Irma visited and started the ball rolling with untolled tornados, 4 tidal waves and estimated 285mph straight line winds. Some of us were lucky enough to experience 2 or even all three of her cleansing techniques. Certain in the know British Military officers said our little island of Tortola was "worse than Baghdad after the bombing". In the two weeks following Irma, we were visited by Jose and welcomed his 16+ inches of rain into our broken homes followed by Maria, who simply completed the work with her dusting of mild category 3 winds.I can tell you- it was an eye-opener! We all learned a lesson in what really matters; that sometimes it's the simple things in life, like a bottle of drinking water,a cold can of baked beans,a can opener and a heavy lock on the door that can bring you the most comfort. I have been told by some friends that freeing trapped neighbors from the rubble of a nearby house is also quite fulfilling. When the military starts patrolling in helicopters, cases of water become available, someone pours a pail of cold cistern water over your head in lieu of a shower and you think you're in heaven or maybe just wish you were, one can truly begin to understand the meaning of death cleansing.Later, when you and your friends are strong enough to come together to saw, smash and shovel through the wreckage of what was once your lives comes a kind of enlightenment; "What the hell was all this stuff anyway?"Of course, there are moments ofter a month or four, when one is caught short remembering grandma's porcelain virgin/infanta or the garter Lulu tossed to your husband at a London revival of 'Guys and Dolls' on your honeymoon, but one soon overcomes the sadness choosing instead to concentrate on the more impotrtant aspects of life like maintaining the generator or camping out in the dry insurance company office to await what is owed for a replacement roof. There are indeed lessons to be learned here, friends.

We can’t take our stuff with us. So when we go, somebody has to clean up all the stuff we leave behind. Margareta Magnusson wrote this book to work out that problem. She says sort it out yourself before you go.She says that death cleaning is not a sad thing to do, as she walks you step by step through eliminating things you need, don’t want, or don’t have room for. She says that remembering the history of each item one last time can actually be enjoyable. Some practical tips include: start by checking the items by your front door; do the large items first; choose the clothes category early on.She also suggests you don’t wait too long.Once you get things under control, you can enjoy life even more. Magnusson says, “Death cleaning is not about dusting or mopping up; it is about a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly.”I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to downsize their belongings and upsize their living.
