Both sides of his personality are revealed in this saga of his search for a Northwest water passageway to the Pacific. This retelling begins as Jefferson informs Lewis that Congress has approved this expedition. After recruiting William Clark and obtaining necessary provisions, the expedition departs St. Louis in 1804. Death, stampeding buffalo herds, steep-sided canyons, large bodies of moving water, and encounters with multiple Native American tribes must be negotiated. The author makes excellent use of the generous page size. The vertical orientation of side panels frames a deep chasm and scale the heights of a tall tree. Prairies are depicted with long horizontal panels spanning the gutter, and full-page spreads show the expansive country, contributing to readers' understanding of the vastness of the journey. Traditional panels and speech balloons are used to portray the points of view of the explorers. Shapes and outlines of panels alter significantly when the various Native communities are depicted, with a different design for each tribe. Inventive use of differently shaped speech balloon help readers identify each individual tribe that the explorers encounter. As excited as I was about getting my hands on Nick Bertozzi's LEWIS & CLARK, I have to say that it turned out to be a sad disappointment to read. Full of inacccurate historical details and incorrect details in Bertozzi's illustrations; the book fell far short of my expectations. Bertozzi's uniforms are pretty sad. His Indians are cookie-cutter stereotypes, both in appearance and in their speech. Lewis comes off as a raging lunatic (hardly the sort of man that Thomas Jefferson would have had as a Private Secretary...or sent to lead an expedition!). Having participated in the recent L&C Bicentennial observance, I just found myself wondering where Bertozzi got his information and his ideas? It seems to me that Nick Bertozzi took a fantastic tale of true adventure and tried to 'improve' on what is already a great story. Sometimes you just cannot make a great story better by exercising 'artistic license'. Looking at the bibliography on the last page of the book, I found myself wondering if the author READ any of the volumes he cites???Nice 'comic book'. Disappointing historical graphic novel.

Gave this as a gift... Haven't read it myself, but enjoyed glancingt hrough it and seeing their journeying portrayed in such a lively way.

It's fairly shameful that I went to a college named after these guys, and I know very little about their expedition. So when I came across this in a search for stuff for my 3rd-grader to read, I figured the least I could do was spend the hour to read it myself. It's kind of an impressionistic take on what really comes across as an astonishing trailblazing venture. The artwork and approach is quite good at conveying the sense of some of the hardships involved. There's a lot going on, with minor threads involving Clark's slave, Sacajawea, Lewis' depression, and more. It's kind of a lot to take in, along with tonal shifts (including fart gags) that are occasionally jarring. Probably the most interesting aspect, which is kind of confusingly rendered here, is all the interactions with various tribes they encountered along the way. It kind of sparked my appetite to learn a little more, and maybe pick up one of the standard histories, such as Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. And although I lament the absence of a more detailed map of the route, the book's overall design and repeated commitment to inventive double-page spread layouts made it a little more interesting than the standard graphic book.

When I read this I thought, "Well, that's the good, the bad and the ugly of the Lewis and Clark story." Fun to read, but definitely comic book fiction, this will probably appeal most to middle school boys, after all it's a story about a bunch of men basically living together for a long period. I was disappointed that Sacagewea's prowess was not applauded. Most of the story is about Meriwether Lewis, who deteriorates into a not-so- likeable guy. Mild-mannered Bill Clark seems to get lost in the shuffle. Dare I say that although Native American tribes are named and differentiated, they blend into the same stereotype. However, dates, territorial maps, and historical informative bits are helpful to those who have forgotten or were never taught about this expedition: Jefferson is president, the USA ends at the Mississippi River, the date of the expedition is 1803/4 to 1806.

Reason for Reading: I enjoy Western history.I've read a few books on Lewis & Clark before (children's books) and read many books on the expansion of the west where the Lewis & Clark story would take up a chapter so I am familiar with this story. This book is recommended for ages 12 and up but it isn't written down to a young audience, adults will enjoy it as much or more. The book of course tells the story of their epic journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean, in search of a viable water route. That journey was fraught with accidents, bad luck, aggressive Indians, injuries and setbacks from nature itself. Bertozzi manages to tell a fine introductory tale of this expedition and these adventurers who were full of their success before they had even started.Bertozzi also brings to life the personalities of Lewis and Clark in a way that I haven't encountered in my previous reading. Captain William Clark is shown as the level headed partner and thus is not the one that stands out. He is always reasoning with Lewis about there plans, calming him down, and putting out the flames of discord with others. He is shown as a quiet, intelligent, reasonable, respectful man who probably kept the expedition from becoming a mess, in more ways than one. Though he was willing to have as much fun as the next guy and went along easily enough with Lewis' more thrill-seeking adventures. On the other hand, Captain Meriwether Lewis was a man with a volatile temper, quick to anger, and if not for Clark's levelheadedness may have caused some serious trouble on their adventure. Lewis was obsessed with the expedition and finding a water route to the Ocean. When coming first upon a huge waterfall and eventually hitting the Rocky Mountains he took these hits deeply and went into deep depressions, took to drink, and could not be reasoned with. When they finally made it to the Pacific Lewis was not happy as they had not made it entirely be a water route and their stay at the end dragged on because he entered a deep depression. Bertozzi also plays up a story involving Lewis, his reactions and feeling which along with many other factors may have lead to his final act of ending his life.Done in black and white, which I always think suits historical non-fiction well, the art is kept simple without a lot of background within the frame by frame discussions of characters. Lovely backgrounds are used but when necessary and are never added clutter. The one problem I did have though, was that at times we are supposed to read horizontally across both pages and this was not always made evident. Sometimes it was obviously clear, other times the reading went down one page and started up again at the top of the other and then there were those times you were reading along and realized you should have read horizontally across both pages once you got to the top of the second page. A minor annoyance that happened to me more times than it should have. A good, interesting story, which Bertozzi has written with a fine sense of humour but not exactly a page-turner.

This book is positively stuffed with Darksiders 2 art. Most of it is concept art by some really talented guys who emulate Joe Mad's art style and philosophy with deft competence. And Mad himself has a few pieces of course. There's over two hundred pages; 217 of content to be exact.I know everyone has different criteria for what they like in an art book, and my complaint with this book is something that may or may not bother you: there is almost no commentary. There is a couple of pages at the end but other than that you get no written insight to the process of design. That being said, there is such an immense amount of art in this volume, so many sketches and painted pieces that they almost tell the story themselves.As a Darksiders fan I found this volume great to flip through and every time I go back I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. The book covers characters, enemies, weapons and places. The places section is pretty sparse, but the rest of the sections are not. There are a couple of missing enemies but they are mostly all there. There's a couple that appeared int he first game that didn't make it in and then there is a boss and a couple of regular enemies that I don't recall seeing but it's possible I missed them due to the vast plethora of enemy art. Oh, there's a section with CGI models as well, which is a nice addition.The binding is good. The pages are thick. Amazon's asking price makes this killer visual tribute to a killer game a must-have for any fan. The only reason i dock it a star is because of the lack of commentary.

I'm not a fan of the Darksiders video games, but Joe Mad has been my favorite comic artist since he started drawing the Uncanny X-Men in the '90s. I bought the first volume (The Art of Darksiders) when the first game came out and couldn't have been happier with the ART. The binding on the first book was TERRIBLE though. With this book it seems that the binding issues have been improved, and the art is again AMAZING. The only complaint I have (it's not really a complaint though) is that I wish some of the images were bigger. There are literally 100s of small pictures that I wish I were bigger so I could see all of the details! If you're a Joe Mad fan, you must add this book to your collection!

Darksiders is back with another great game and equally great accompanying art. The Art of Darksiders 2 is divided into Key Visuals (Artwork), Characters & Enemies, Weapons, Locations, CG models, Storyboards, some commentary on art development, and Key Visuals (CG). It's a bit thinner than the first book, but the binding has improved (thank God). In my opinion, the layout is more organized and even. The first artbook was more scattered and left blank space between the small thumbnails.Despite this, I highly recommend both artbooks if you love the game or video game art in general. There are lots of wickedly good drawings on every page. I'm very pleased with the quality and quantity. :)

This book has a generous serving of art and drawings by Joe Madureira. You can be assured that all art; even the sketches in there are in the leagues of the best entertainment art out there. Words are little in this book. It is purely about the art. The consistency in the style is staggeringly superb from sketch to finish. Print is of high quality and art is well organized in the book. The book is a great size of slightly bigger then letter size and an inch thick! The price for a book of this caliber on amazon is a bloody steal. Highly recommend artist an fans of the Joe Madureira and the game to get this book immediately.

First of all, it's Joe MAD we're talking about here, that should be reason enough. The book is filled with drawings and sketches of all the characters which is great because you get a chance to see how they actually evolved. Usually video game "art of" books have a lot of polished character poses but this one actually shows you the rough sketches, which I love.It also isn't as heavy on the environmental art like some other video game "art of" books and focuses more on actual characters. Great book, wish the game was as good.

Great book.If you are into concept art, this is pretty much another must have in your library. It shows a great variety of ideation sketches for pretty much every characters, and they are all fun to look at.If you are one of those people who are looking for production paintings / concept paintings (nothing wrong with that) chances are this "might" not be perfect for you. However, all the sketches and looseness are really great to look at for those who are into design. In other words, this is not a "pretty book"; It shows a ton of awesome thumbnails and these are much more important than well done paintings for students.

Give all the characters, scenes and weaponries the off screen time they deserve! You'd be awed at the insane amt of details going into stuff you'd have miss while playing the game!Reasons why its not full starred (for me). I don't play the game, its not really my genre (I tend to avoid gross goulies...)For those who'd love the game and into this genre of art/ artist.

This book is beautifully put together and full of amazing art from cover to cover. I am immediately surprised by just how much art is in this book and how well organized it is. The Art of Darksiders 2 also appears to have been better made then The Art of Darksiders 1. The first book had major problems with the binding and fell appart immediately even when gently flipping through. I am being super careful with Darksiders 2 (just in case) but so far I am not seeing any issue with the binding. Crossing my fingers that it says that way! In any case, a must have book for Darksiders fans or art lovers.

I can't imagine myself using an external hex anymore. Restoration nowadays is also a lot less complicated with a wider range of abutments and other accessories.Secondly, the surgical techniques are almost never explained in detail. Perhaps an interactive handson course would be better able to impart that, but if you're a newbie, don't expect to learn much about surgical procedures. A bit disappointing for me when I first bought it, given the size and price of the book.

Clear and impressively detailed discussion of multiple complex, important elder law issues!

The book is filled with great info. But I wish the author did not promote his own company . It sounds very tacky .

Having recently had the "opportunity" of getting an elderly relative approved for Medicaid, I found this book helpful in understanding the concepts and details the legal beagle we hired was throwing at us with abandon - and less than stellar understanding of the state requirements himself. Some of the ideas are useful as preparation in talking to an attorney who understands your own circumstances, and the state laws which will govern your attempts to salvage some of your own assets from the numbskull bureaucrats with whom you'll have to deal.

This book seemed to me to be more of an infomertial than a source of reliable information. He pushes one thing too hard,on a single approach, to the virtual exclusion of all else - and that one thing happens to be a product he licenses. His examples are like the examples in TV commercial. Extreme, overdone and a 100% one sided. Can not recommend.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is serious about protecting their assets from the nightmares of probate, lawsuits and nursing home expenses. The book is easy to read, clear and concise. The examples in the book are real and very informative; they illustrate the dire consequences that families face when their loved ones do not plan in advance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about protecting their life's savings from catastrophic nursing home costs. As a fellow elder law attorney, I can vouch for the fact that Mr. Evan Farr is truly a pioneer in this field.

Eyewitness guides are always good and this one is no exception. It has lots of pictures, good descriptions, and maps. I own several of this eyewitness guides and continue to buy them when I travel.

Almost 99% same as the 2014 version. Page numbers and pictures are almost 100% identical. Only the very last few pages and the cover picture are different. It is a good guide for the Netherlands but a terrible update. Rating is 2 stars for the update otherwise it would be 4 stars

This book by Clark Williamson and Ron Allen combine several of the aspects their (and my) seminary is known for - practical guidance in preaching with process theology as an important component. One of the first tasks of this book, given that many divinity students can make it through seminary without being exposed to process theology, is to explain the key ideas. In the introduction, Williamson and Allen give a quick overview of the key points in a nonspecialist, nontechnical manner. Looking at preaching as authentic and adequate only when it addresses both the biblical text and our deepest convictions, the authors build a framework in which, as the title suggests, credible and timely preaching can be done.Process theology addresses many of the problems traditional theologies from the origins of Christianity to the twentieth century struggled with, namely, how to look at God as involved and caring in the world where there seems to be so much injustice and violence on an ever-increasing scale. Process theology also seeks to build bridges between philosophy, science and religion in ways that reduce the antagonism between the disciplines. Since what we think of who and what God is is often at the centre of preaching, an early chapter is devoted to looking at historical models of God, alternative models of God, old and new metaphors for God, and different aspects of God's action and relationship with humanity.Williamson and Allen also look at injustice in the world - what are preachers preaching about, anyway? The authors identify five primary systematic injustices in current society - ecological injustice, classism, sexism, racism, and militarism. These terms are carefully defined and are examined from the standpoint of individual responsibility and societal capacity for change. The authors call upon the church (and thus, the preachers in the church) to take a strong stand against such evils.In looking at process hermeneutics (the way that one engaged in process theology would interpret the bible), Williamson and Allen argue for a norm of appropriateness that is intellectually credible and morally plausible - any interpretation that fails these three criteria should be considered suspect. 'The gospel requires us to make sense,' the authors contend, and this is not always easily done. This chapter presupposes some familiarity with different hermeneutical ideas, as process hermeneutics will not attempt to be a closed-circle method of interpretation, but rather draws from the strengths of other types of interpretation (literary criticism, canonical criticism, etc.). This might be a difficulty for readers not seminary- or graduate school-trained.Following this discussion on principles and theory of process hermeneutics, the authors provide a chapter on methodology for exegesis, theological analysis, and coming to a meaning relevant for the current day. Specific texts from the Bible are used to demonstrate the 'how' of this.Concluding the book are two sermons (one assumes from the two authors, but who gave which sermon is not immediately apparent, and does not seem to have been specified in the text - knowing the authors as I do, I was able to discern who gave which sermon, but the average reader would likely not be able to do so). These are not held up as ideals or patterns to be followed, but rather as examples of the method of interpretation and adaptation. Both are credible, timely, faithful to the gospel witness, and appropriate to their context of delivery.The book ends with an extensive bibliography on theology, biblical interpretation, and other topics, but is not arranged topically. There is no index (the rating might lose a star for that if it weren't such a wonderful text). These are minor flaws in an otherwise great text.

I am using this now for my MBA healthcare coursework- this book is actually really good and I am somewhat regretting renting it since it would be valuable to keep. Great real world examples and very applicable to the healthcare field.

Very interesting book, lots of terms easily simplified for better understanding. Great scenarios used to help understand.

BackgroundI recently decided to learn Mandarin but I work full-time and my schedule isn't flexible enough where I would be able to take night courses, so I set out to teach myself (with the help of my girlfriend, a native speaker). I looked up several books on Amazon and cross referenced them to local universities to see which were "tried and true" for college level learning. The Integrated Chinese series appeared to be widely used so I purchased the level 1 part 1 textbook and workbook.Book StructureThere are 10 chapters and each chapter is broken down into two sub-chapters that are identical in structure. Each sub-chapter begins with a dialogue that introduces that new words and grammar rules. Next you are presented with a vocabulary list of new words which generally will consist of 10-20 new words. After the vocab list comes the new grammar rules followed by practice exercises. Each chapter has a theme such as hobbies, traveling, family, etc.OpinionThe textbook is easy to follow and the grammar rules are explained in plain English. Level 1 Part 1 is what I would expect from 1 semester of college level language studies. If you're teaching yourself, you'll need someone to help you with your pronunciation. They offer language CDs separately so you can listen to the dialogues, but I didn't bother purchasing them so I'm unable to comment on them. I did purchase the workbook but haven't used it at all because the practice sections in the textbook have been sufficient. Overall I would recommend this book to someone who is motivated to learn Mandarin and at a pace comparable to a college level course.

This textbook is an excellent resource that makes learning Chinese so much easier! The pace is just right: not too slow or too fast, and vocabulary and grammar points are delivered in very digestible chunks. The dialogues are level-appropriate, and both pinyin and English translations of the characters are provided separately, so you can refer to them if you need to but they do not distract you if you want to challenge yourself to read just the characters. Grammar points are explained very clearly. This book would easily suit both people studying on their own and people learning in a classroom environment. Everything is clear enough that no further explanation is needed, just some exposure to Chinese pronunciation - which is abundant on the web for free. The Simplified and Traditional Character Workbook is an excellent companion book for practicing writing the characters you learn in the textbook. There is also a Simplified Character Workbook that is not character writing practice but different kinds of exercises for pinyin and characters. The latter I think would be less useful for the independent learner, but it's still a good resource. These books take all of the "intimidation" factor OUT of learning Chinese!

Absolutely fantastic series of books! The first two years of my Chinese classes in college used the Integrated Chinese series as the main curriculum material. The entire series incorporates vocabulary and grammar points that are relevant to the beginner/intermediate student. Rather than simply listing out dozens of vocab words, each chapter is prefaced with a dialogue or short commentary that uses the following vocab words. Teaching relevant words is one thing, but giving them in a relevant context was incredibly helpful. In addition, the dialogues and commentaries were not random stories - the Integrated Chinese series follows the lives of a handful of characters as they walk through life together, recording their conversations and experiences. It very much resembles Friends the way that the characters interact with one another, fall in love, go to school, express struggles, etc. For our class, we wanted to plow through each chapter for the sake of getting to the next drama-filled episode of Li You and Wang Peng's love story.The accompanying videos were the icing on the cake, as (very clearly) white actors were used with terrible dubs to tell the thrilling storyline of how Gao Wenzhong tries to intervene in the aforementioned love story. People have Bachelor parties and Gossip Girl get-togethers, but each day of class for us became an Integrated Chinese viewing party.All joking aside, the approach this series takes to teaching language (much less a language which is often deemed "too difficult" for native English speakers) is simple and natural and caters well to the cultural environments that college age students encounter. Each chapter concludes with a handful of vocab/grammar practices, and the workbooks (purchased separately) really helped to drive these points home for me. They also introduced new points that could be extrapolated from the main text. We tore the workbook sheets out each week when we turned them in as homework. Using these books four semesters in a row prepared me well for third year Chinese and I still have/read through all of these books. Thank you Integrated Chinese!

Generally these books are required for classes. Yes, it has lots of vocabulary and the grammar is helpful. However, if you're a teacher reading this review, please consider using another book to teach by. Integrated Chinese began to get sloppy with the illustrations in the book and the content jumps around. At the level most students are when learning material of this type, I would think that the dialogue between the characters would have a little more substance and not seem so random. In fact, some of the translations of the words in English many students are unfamiliar with because they are outdated.

Brian Magee provides an admiral introduction to the major trends and personages in the history of that which we are pleased to call western philosophy. The book brings together text and artwork to present philosophical ideas and philosophers in an approachable manner. The book is a wonderful introduction that keeps the reader interested through lively text and captivating illustrations.The text is highly readable and the prints are very enjoyable if you happen to have a magnifying glass. The book would render much better as a large format style book. As it is, a magnifying glass is necessary and some of the artwork is photo reduced to fit the dimensions of this book to such an exaggerated extent that it detracts from the force and effectiveness of the original artwork.

This is a very readable although fairly short illustrated history of philosophy, by an extremely knowledgeable author. This s great book to read if you just want an overview of the history of philosophy as well as brief explanations of most of the schools of thought. Magee has written many works on philosophy and has created a couple of BBC series on philosophy. His writing style is very clear and he makes extremely interesting points about the different philosophers and about philosophy in general. There are many digressions and sidebars throughout the book that consider various philosphical points in a very brief manner (for example, "Can the existence of God be proved?", "The power of ideas", and "The Einsteinian revolution"). The book itself - like most Dorling-Kindersley (DK) books I've seen - is extremely well done, a beautiful book that invites browsing.

This is an excellent, simple history of philosophy for people (like me) who have little knowledge of the subject and want a clear, easy to remember overview. The format is forty or so chapters, usually four to eight pages long apiece, with interesting illustrations and sidebars, devoted to each important philosopher or philosophic movement from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century.I have read other books that cover the same ground as this one, but they weren't as clear and were perhaps too technical and detailed for a non-philosopher like me. At any rate, I never retained much of what I read on philosophy until I found this book.

The Story of Philosophy is a facinating and highly informative introduction to the history of western philosophy.It is a book that would be fun to read either from start to finish or just skipping around. It is written in a waythat is understandable to readers new to the subject, while not being dumbed down. The book is visually appealing with manyphotographs and illustrations, along with sidebars on nearly every page introducing the reader to subjects relating to the main text. My only complaint is that I think the title should be "The Story of Western Philosophy", because it only lightly covers eastern and arabic philosophy, which is rather odd considering that my copy promonently features the Buddha on the cover. However, it does provide a helpful "For further reading" section that includes works on those subjects. Altogether, this is an excellent book that I am glad to add to my library. I also recommend as a good companion to this book DK's "World Religions" by John Bowker.

A really excellent read, although the type is very small

At first sight, this book may appear as a colorful, photo-packed elementary book on philosophy but it is much more. Bryan Magee elegantly and, most important, fairly presents the philosophers, their beliefs, their influence, and the 'eternal' questions they left us.Above the excellent summarization and presentation, the great feature of the book is he clearly traces the development of ideas through generations of philosophers. Even for someone like me, who has taken philosophy courses at University level, this book is a great way to get a quick overview. The pictures and side boxes also add the historical context to the formation of the philosophers' ideas.

The best summary of history of Philosophy

Bryan Magee's broad overview is a perfect introduction to the wide wonderful world of Philosophy. It's a great reference tool. This DK book is, like all the rest, beautiful, richly illustrated, and incredibly useful.

Charles-Roux's analysis may occasionally have more style than substance, but this balance would hardly have bothered Chanel, for whom style was always everything. And with a Chanel exhibition coming up at the Metropolitan Museum in May, 2005, it seems unlikely that this book will every be out of print for so long again. If you are looking for an introduction to Chanel and her world, begin here. It is a pictorial biography with about 2/3 text and 1/3 images highlighting the narration. It is great to read about a person or place in Chanel's life and then look to the photo above and see what the author is describing. You feel as if you are going back in time. Edmonde Charles-Roux was a friend of Chanel and editor of French VOGUE. This is a sympathetic portrayal.It is as much about the people and places which surrounded Chanel as Chanel herself. There isn't much coverage of Chanel's activities during WWII or directly afterward. The emphasis is more on the positive and creative parts of Chanel's life. I found the years when Chanel first set up business through the 1930's the most fascinating. It is a fairly quick read. Loved the abundant images on every page. You visually immerse yourself in her world. There are wonderful quotes of Chanel's sprinkled throughout.

An excellent history of our wonderful Chanel. She was God's gift to women because she took away corsets and hems that dragged on the ground. This book was recommended by The New York Times - the photos alone are worth buying it for.

Beautiful, classy coffee table book. The pink binding makes it even more beautiful.

I was looking for a book showing photos of Chanel's clothing designs and styles. This book focuses more on her life and the celebrities and cultural/social trends of her era (spanning 1910's - 1950's), so if you are looking to see her clothing styles and designs, you will be disappointed as there isn't that much coverage of the actual clothing. However, it is a very absorbing, encyclopedic, pictorial collection of the people of Chanel's time and you can spend many a lazy Sunday afternoon thoroughly exploring les temps perdus. There are many many pictures of Coco Chanel - like Madonna, she looks different every few years, a real chameleon. It retails at $65, so the $37 Amazon price is a good deal. It is a heavy thick book with glossy pages.

Beautiful book canâ€™t wait to put it together with my home decor when I move to my new apartment! I also bought the Lv , miss Dior and another chanel! In love with all of them .

Christmas gift for my daughter. She loved the book and deemed it a keeper. We donate a lot of books that we fine just ok to the library and keep only books that we really liked and would look at or read more than once. This was a keeper
