Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of February 2019: Lee Miller was already an accomplished model when she made her way to Paris in the 1930s, but her aim was to be behind the camera. A chance meeting with famed Surrealist photographer Man Ray set this plan in motion, and revealed that Miller’s artistic ability--and her ambition—rivaled that of her mentor (and eventual lover). Whitney Scharer’s sumptuous debut novel, The Age of Light, captures their passionate, and complicated, relationship, and pays homage to the pluck, determination and profound talents of a woman sometimes relegated to a footnote in Man Ray’s history. Both his and Scharer’s muse shines here. --Erin Kodicek, Amazon Book Review

Review

Named a most anticipated book of 2019 by Oprah.com, Entertainment Weekly, Southern Living, Woman's Day, and Pop Sugar"Scharer's debut is a rivetingly sexy snapshot of the duo's real-life relationship as it morphs from apprenticeship to partnership to tumultuous love affair."― Kim Hubbard, People"Whatever reams of research Scharer put into excavating Miller's story she distills here into clean, consistently evocative prose. The glittering bohemia of 1930s Paris, the pastoral boredom of mid-'60s Sussex, the hollowed-out carnage of postwar Europe; all come equally alive on the page, as do iconic figures like Ray and Cocteau and Kiki de Montparnasse. But none breathe more vividly than Miller herself: Fiercely independent but racked by self-doubt, desperate for affection and approval even as she chafed at sentiment, she spent decades fighting to find her voice. It was worth the wait." ―Entertainment Weekly"Like Paris in the 1930s, Sharer's first novel is a radiant clash of romance and reality"―O, the Oprah Magazine"She joins such novelists as Paula McLain ("The Paris Wife") and Rupert Thomson ("Never Anyone but You") in a most worthy enterprise: repopulating male-dominated accounts of the past with the many noteworthy women who deserve the same limelight."―Donna Rikfind, Washington Post"Scharer...skillfully renders an electric version of the city, pulling the reader into the opulence and mystery of the era."―Annabel Gutterman, Time"An absolutely gorgeous and feminist novel about art, love, and ownership, The Age of Light is truly a work of art in itself, both deeply moving and thrilling. Want to know what it's like to be an artist? Read this astonishing novel and then, like Lee Miller, take time to consider the extraordinary cost she paid to be herself."―Caroline Leavitt, Boston Globe"Is "woman behaves dangerously, lives wildly" a genre? If so, The Age of Light is its latest poster child. The novel is work of historical fiction about Lee Miller, a Vogue model who became one of the first female war correspondents. In Scharer's plot, Miller travels to Paris where she meets photographer Man Ray, who becomes her collaborator and lover. While most stories about Miller paint her as Ray's muse, this one portrays her as the independent and daring artist she truly was."―GlamourScharer's debut is both engrossing and cinematic, a must for readers who enjoy a fictional peek into the lives of real-life artists.―Library Journal"Scharer sets her viewfinder selectively, focusing on her heroine's insecurities as much as her accomplishments as an artist; her hunger to be more than "a neck to hold pearls, a slim waist to show off a belt" is contrasted with her habit of solving problems by simply leaving. The price for Lee is steep, but it makes for irresistible reading. Sexy and moving."―Kirkus, starred review

To be honest I didn't like this book, but I give it three stars for being extremely well written. I simply didn't like its characters; didn't care for their mental issues, and that is what to me the book is about, a bunch of mentally ill people. Was it because her dad took dirty pictures of her? Was it the war? Was it a number of things that made this woman resort to angry mindless sex with dirty soldiers? To drunken cooking later in life? To just nastiness? I feel like her anger issues and her romance with Man smothers anything artistic about her. Yes, the details about making photos back in the 30s is fascinating, but from then on, it's downhill. Regardless it's not a "woman beats all odds and comes out the better for it" tale. And there's not a lot inspiring about her. She took some war photos and was scarred by it but doesn't seem to be a woman to admire or aspire to.

This is an okay novel. Since it's written in the present tense and third-person it reads like an extended set of stage directions, which made me feel I couldn't truly get to know the characters. Lee felt very distant and inscrutable, and Man Ray character felt flat as well. On the whole it feels like a missed opportunity to explore the lives of some genuinely intriguing people. One other thing: as I've been working out my thoughts about this book I've been reading the customer reviews. Every one-star review has vanished--and there have been several, most of them pointing out the unlikeability of the characters and a few expressing dismay at the "racy" content. There are rules, I imagine, for what you can post, but I wonder if the publisher or Amazon is removing these lower ratings to keep up the sales. (I wonder if this review will be made to disappear as well?)

I seriously cannot say enough great things about this book. With 2 young kids, reading fell to the back burner for more than 5 years. Then I read an early manuscript of this and could not put it down. I fell back in love with reading and now just want to find other equally gorgeous books to soak up. I'm now re-reading it -- in its published version -- and every single page brings new joy to me. The story, the writing, the dialogue, the imagery.....this novel in nothing short of incredible. Now, back to finishing The Age of Light!

Sometimes a novel comes along that you become so enthralled with that you do not want to put it down and almost feel sorrow at reaching the final pages. The Age of Light is that kind of novel. It offers a sexy, intimate look at the life of photographer Lee Miller. Lee has worked as a model in New York but wants to get behind the camera and be in charge, so she finds a way to become Man Ray’s assistant after meeting him in Paris in 1929. Their love affair is totally believable, as is her inability to find satisfaction with one man, even an artistic genius like Man Ray. Brief chapters about her war photography interrupt the narrative but they are not at all jarring. Instead they provide a deeper understanding of all that she aspired to while with Man Ray. What I found particularly fascinating was the characterization. Whitney Sharer captures Lee’s imperfections so well. We share her bad moods. We struggle with her choices. We try to make sense of her inconsistencies. I have met women like Lee Miller in my life and did not especially like them. After reading this book, I felt as if an examination of their childhood years might have helped in understanding their behavior. Run, don’t walk, to your closest independent bookstore to get a copy of this novel. You will not be disappointed.

Not sure why all the hype...this book is so tragic and so depressing. It feels like 50 shades...too much sex and S&M for my taste.

I loved this book and, as others have commented, it is beautifully written. I'll certainly buy Ms. Scharer's next book.I've read biography's of Lee Miller and seen scores of Man Ray's photos, many of which sprung into my mind as they were described in the book. I wonder if this familiarity with their work improved, or distracted from my experience in reading this book. The Wall Street Journal review that led me to this book featured the iconic photo of Lee in Hitler's bathtub, a startling visual on many levels. But, is a written description of that work, or Man Ray's experimental work adequate to describe their places in the history of photographic art?In sum, it probably doesn't matter. This is a story about how each of these fascinating artists felt ABOUT their work, each other and their times along with their mutual misappropriation of their talents. It matters less knowing exactly why they were more than just another studio photographer and fashion model. This is a fine book....amazing that it is a first novel. Read it. But, if you're not familiar with them, it won't be a spoiler to read the Wikipedia entries of them both before starting The Age of Light.

I have read previous books that have included glimpses into Lee Miller’s life in Paris in the 1930’s and I have read factual accounts about her life as a Vogue model, life with Man Ray, as a war correspondent. This book, while fiction, brought what I have read previously into one powerful story giving insight into this complex, talented and troubled woman. How much is fiction and how much is fact is unknown but the book is absorbing and a great read! I look forward to seeing what or who will be next from this author.

It was difficult to have any sympathy for Lee Miller, the way she was written in this book and after reading other pieces, I had developed admiration for her -- I'm glad this wasn't my first encounter with her life. Her obvious passion for and ability to create wasn't fully explored. I found my self wishing for more time spent on her life away from Man Ray. How did she make a life as an independent woman? What was it like to be one of the few female war photographers? What did she think about how her work was received? The book should have cut out many of the breathless and endless descriptions of wild parties and sexual encounters and spent more time on Lee Miller's life.

From Publishers Weekly

From Swan Lake to The Sleeping Beauty, the plots of 10 beloved ballets (The Nutcracker, The Firebird, Giselle, etc.) are set forth in Geraldine McCaughrean's dramatic prose in The Random House Book of Stories from the Ballet; Angela Barrett's finely detailed artwork-elaborate borders, evocative spot pictures and full-page paintings-ranges from haunting to comic (Random, $18, 126p, ages 9-12 ISBN 0-679-87125-X Aug.).Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?Plot summaries from 10 classical ballets, all of them major crowd-pleasers such as Swan Lake, Coppelia, and The Nutcracker. The most recent ballets covered are Romeo and Juliet, Petrouchka, and The Firebird. The reteller presents them as short stories complete with dialogue and thoughts. She does a credible job of briefly and accurately presenting the plots in a way that should hold the interest of readers who have no background on the subject. Barrett's handsome illustrations have a 19th-century, old-fashioned look. They include lots of period detail, and are done predominately in pastels, gold, orange, and dark blue. They look just like ballets in their detailed design and pretty colors. Louis Untermeyer's Tales from the Ballet (Golden Press, 1968; o.p.) covers more ballets (and more modern ones) with briefer plot summaries, while Jane Rosenberg's Dance Me a Story (Thames and Hudson, 1985; o.p.) describes the same ballets as McCaughrean, but in greater detail, and her book is aimed more at serious young dance students. McCaughrean's volume compares well with both of those titles and should enrich any collection.?Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, GACopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

If you're a dancer or regular ballet-goer, you're probably familiar with all the stories covered by this book; but if you don't know much about ballet, or have a child beginning ballet, this is a beautiful book to start with. It covers the most famous ballet stories, like The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, as well as many popular but not generally known ballets like Giselle. The illustrations are beautiful, so even if you're familiar with all the stories, if you're a ballet fan you may still want to add this to your collection. BTW, as soon as I can I'll add a list of all the stories told in this collection.

Pictures are quite nice, but not many. Would've liked a few more, but the stories seemed pretty good.

My daughter loves this book. She is 8 and read it cover-to-cover when it got here.

This is by far the shortest book I own and yet also the densest. It is so brilliantly composed that hardly ever did a single word or phrase seem unnecessary. I like to collect my favorite passages from the books I read and soon found myself transcribing the entire work. This may only represent a tiny portion of the Buddhist canon, but you will find yourself wondering why any more writings are even necessary if you are able to comprehend the depth and scope of this brief text.Juan Mascaro quickly became a translator I had to read more from and I made sure to get his renditions of The Upanishads and The Bhagavad Gita as well as his rare personal collection of meditative aphorisms The Creation of Faith. What makes Mascaro so valuable as a representative of these spiritual texts is that he had not only an exceptional talent for translating and capturing the essence and flow of ancient works, but he was very much on a spiritual quest of his own. You can feel how respectful and careful he was in balancing the archaic rhythm and tone of the texts and the need to make them equally beautiful and sensible in a foreign language and for modern readers.

I've read the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Dhammapada, and I'm working on the Bodhicaryavatara. The Dhammapada is, by far, my favorite. I'll let others debate the value of Juan Mascaro's translation, as I'm no authority on translations, nor have I read the scholarly literature on the subject -- all what I've seen is people debating it here on Amazon, and I don't know those people from Adam. Let me just say that I really enjoy the Penguin classics edition, and his introduction to the volume is quite good.

I fully disagree with the bad reviews about Mascaro's translation of the Dhammapada, the ones that complain it does not flow or is inaccurate. I have read several versions, and this one is the best. Poetic, elegant, capturing the essence and spirit of the original meaning. It's a translator's job to do exactly that, and not be a mere transcriptionist. I first had this version in 2005, and if it tells you anything now I re-ordered in 2017 it after finding lesser other versions. This is the one I don't want to be without.

I'm something of a christian theologian and I've long felt the need to learn a bit about buddhism. Juan's introduction is exactly what I wanted to find and has been most helpful to me in understanding what it is that so many people find in this discipline. The differences between my christianity and a buddhist's belief it seems to me are simply different ways of expressing very similar world views - using different explanatory models to represent as best we can the underlying reality of existence.I was delighted to find, actually to confirm, the existence of this common ground between us. I'd go further and say that as I read this book I felt a very familiar sense of inner elation and discovery similar to what I get when reading parts of the bible. My early impression is that the effect with the Dhammapada if anything seems to be concentrated in far fewer words, though that may just be due to long familiarity with the christians' bible. I remember feeling the same sense of excitement when first reading the books of the old and new testaments.I am gratified to have become slightly less ignorant in this subject and would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in theology and who has not yet bothered to read anything about buddhist beliefs.

I agree with one of the other reviewers who said that this translation is 'deeply disappointing'. The translation has no flow, it's almost as if it was auto-translated using some software! the verses are dry and sometimes make almost no sense...I am really disappointed! I am donating this book to any used bookstore who will take it!Moving on, I purchased Gil Fronsdal's translation and it is beautifully written. I would highly recommend Fronsdal's version.

I gave this particular copy as a gift to my cousin, that she may use it to guide her grandchildren. This is Juan Mascaro's translation of The Dhammapada; it's my favorite. I have read it many times (as one ought). There is a rock-hard pragmatism in these teachings. Read the first chapter, "Contrary Ways", and you will keep The Dhammapada near you for the rest of your life. - I promise that!

About the Author

Anna-Marie Ferguson, a Scorpio, was born November 10, 1966, in the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire, England. When she was ten years old her family emigrated to rural Alberta, Canada. Anna returned to England in 1982 to undergo training in graphic design. She eventually returned to Alberta, where she continued a career in design, devoting her spare time to developing her illustrating skills, ably assisted by her three cats. Anna's fascination with Celtic legends and the Tarot began when she was a child in England. The atmosphere of the New Forest was steeped in history, and faithful readings of the legends cultivated an appreciation of "the romantic" in Anna. Such formative influences have inspired Anna to keep this bygone age alive through her art.

Very pretty, but a very cheap set. The cards come wrapped in plastic. They do have a nice compact case, but the card guide for interpretation is sparse. If you are just beginning to read tarot, I wouldn't recommend this because you might get confused on interpreting the card's meaning.

I had a prior version that I loved, it was my go-to deck and favorite. Unfortunately I lost some cards to a puppy and had to order a replacement. The illustrations are the same but more washed out in this deck, the detail is blurred. The card stock doesn't feel as thick, either. Hopefully it'll be more familiar once I start using it but for now, I'm somewhat disappointed.

I can't say that I was exactly attracted to these cards visually but bought a deck because my sister said they really worked for her. I have many decks and I will have to admit that this is the one I gravitate to because they seem to give me the best readings. I bought the companion book too but I rarely use it. My 'go to' book is Tarot for a New Generation by Janina Renée. She uses this deck in the book so they cards are easy to find. I think these cards would be great for anyone. Beginner or Advanced.

I love this deck.. i like the art work & for some reason, the first time i layed eyes on this deck it really caught my attention from a far. I read the little simple booklet it comes with (looks like the booklets that come with your new pair of headphones/electronics; i was expecting a bigger colorful book) the booklet is very simple to read and understand.. i been having a hard time putting time to learn the tarot cards but for some reason, the way she explained it made sense to me & the cards itself made so much sense than any other deck that ive seen (i own the classic ones as well).

Yes, I love this tarot deck a lot. I know it may seem strange, but I use the tarot to help me with certain decisions. What I do is I shuffle the card 3 or more times, I put the deck down and cut the deck to the right. Then I flip up the top card on each pile. If a major arcana card is the top of one of the piles, then the tarot is telling me to make that choice. But if both cards are major or minor arcana, then the tarot cannot help me at the time.Right now, I'm working on a tarot deck based on characters and settings from my book. I just need an artist specializing in oils or acrylics to create the images.

Great set of cards for my collection.Card stock feels good. Not cheap.Artwork is just ok.

I have read tarot for 23 years, and this is the deck that I use the most. The thing about finding a deck to read with is that you have to find one that speaks to you - one that has images and symbols that resonate with you. As a lifelong lover of the Arthurian Traditions, I have gravitated to all things Arthurian from books to films right down to Tarot decks. I have several that are Celtic/Arthurian but this one has more depth than most. Yes, there's a dark side, but how else are you to balance the light? If you read with an unbalanced deck how can your readings be anything BUT unbalanced? One-sided? These cards are pen/ink and watercolor and even I think a bit of airbrush from time to time - the images take you deeper into Arthurian legend to some of the more obscure legends and lessons within those legends. You don't JUST get to see Gawain and the Green Knight but you get to meet Ragnell and so many others - you get to see through the symbols and colors that blend so well something deeper than simple pentacles or coins/rods or wands/swords/cups or grails......you find the meaning that goes so much deeper and into the crux of the questioner's questions and/or issues at hand. If your love is Arthurian Tradition and you're drawn to such things, this is an amazing deck to use - but it's NOT for beginners.

This deck is beyond my expectations. I love it. The stories that come with each card makes you feel as if you're part of the King Arthur path.
